...because the key broke off in the petrol cap.

Luckily there are two seperate keys on this bike, and I still have the ignition key.

Can a keysmith make me a new one from the two halves of the old key?

Lucky this didn't happen when I was up in Scotland eh! Very Happy

Possibly.

A locksmith should be able to make you a key to fit the lock if you take it to them anyway.

Your locations says up north.

If your near to Huddersfield, there's a lock smith who specialises
in that sort of thing and he is on A629, just heading out of Huddersfield towards Sheffield (about 1/4mile from the Uni.) He's on the left hand side of the road.

You supply the barrel, he supplies the key.

Unfortunately nowhere near Sheffield.

Have about a litre of petrol left in the bike Laughing

I've just phoned Thorncrafts and they say they should be able to cut me a new one. So I'll take it up there at lunchtime.

Can't you make a copy from your spare and just get the locksmith to get the snapped key out?

They really should have no probs making a key for your lock - I had it done recently after my only key popped out of the ignition whilst I was riding along. Confused

However, be careful since sometimes (like mine) the key for the petrol cap is only 'half' of the key for the ignition. Really they need both the ignition lock and petrol cap to make a key which works both. I now have two keys - one for the ignition and one for the petrol cap, which is a bit annoying.

Can only assume that at some point the bike was stolen and had the ignition replaced.

I have 1 key for both but my petrol cap lock is busted - looks like it's just corroded over time. I doubt anyone will ever try to syphon petrol out of my miniscule tank anyway - I've tried to get a lockable replacement but it's a nightmare trying to get hold of the right size and the official Honda part is ridiculously expensive!

Aye, I'm more worried about someone torching it than anything.

I did that years ago except I had a spare so I kept the stub key on me for the petrl tank and used the spare on the ignition. Used it that way for months until Keith got annoyed and removed the broken bit from the tank. Sad

Translated as "spent several hours stripping down the petrol cap and removing the remains of the key".

All the best

Similar happened to me once - two keys; one for ignition, one for steering lock and petrol cap. The latter snapped off in the steering lock, so I had ignition but couldn't fill up. Sold the bike like that, with just enough fuel on reserve to get me to the buyer's house Laughing

Do what I did, get impatient and use a hammer and a screwdriver Thumbs Up

Then you can use your front door key to open it if you want to lol.

When I have had spare keys cut, they simply put your key in a little vice thingy and then run the machine over it which makes an copy.

I can't really see the key bing in two bits making teh blindest bit of difference to this process (apart from emaning the two bits of the source key have to be carefully clamped together/aligned in the vice.

So I'd say its not a problem Thumbs Up

Or are the halves bent all out of shape?!?! Shocked

Oh and Louise ... WD40 in all your locks ... use the little red straw thingy and inject some in (pushing the straw in helps you get past the locks flip/cover/slidy protective thingy so the WD40 gets to the heat of the matter!) Thumbs Up

Coincidently, I had to WD40 my cars lock this am ... its been getting a bit hit and miss recently, but this AM it was flexing the key to open it Shocked ... so it was time to get the WD40 out!!!! .. a quick squirt and its now sweet as a nut again!! Cool

IIRC you're actually meant to use graphite lube in locks, as WD40 does *something* bad (not sure what).

I use chain lube in locks. It keeps it lubed longer than WD40. Thumbs Up

I have revised my solution. I just put a screwdriver in and the whole lock fell out, and now the petrol cap has a gap in it Rolling Eyes

WD40 is NOT meant as a lubricant, its a water dispersant ... it actually great for cleaning gunk off swingarms etc, so it is safe to say it lifts oil. Which I guess is where it is deemed bad? i.e. we are not lubricating it per-say ...

But as we all know, WD40 is great stuff if something is jammed ... I've used it squliiions of times in squillions of locks (including ignition) and never had a problem .. as have squliiions of others no doubt Wink

Same here, I've used it to free up my front door lock as well, and that was over a year ago, not needed re-lubing yet (but it isn't exposed to the elements). Just that I've heard it can actually cause things to stick to the inside of the lock (dust etc) and that you're meant to use a solvent to clean it and then graphite lube to lube it. Thumbs Up
