this is probably posted somewhere but i couldn't find anything

out on my RS today i decided to see how my U-turns were, the answer is BAD! luckily where i did it there was a ramp so i didnt have to worry about hitting the pavement, i went about 3 foot over where the kerb would be lol

on the CG i did my CBT on i did it brilliantly same goes for the figure of 8 turn but obviously its alot harder to do on the aprilia, just wondered if anyone had any tips cause i sucked hard!

the fact you can barely turn the handle bars is the biggest handy cap i would imagine...

anyhelp would be much apreciated Smile

Best advice for turning the bike round

Left, left, left, right
Smile

Slightly more helpful
U turns on a sports bike arent easy
Try it walking first, that will give you an idea of what the smallest space it will u turn in is.
Then practise on roads wider than that Smile

On the plus side, if you can master it on the RS then the test bike will be a doddle. Smile

Keep your foot gently on the back brake, then keep the revs up and use the brake to modulate your speed - it's way more sensitive and quicker than getting the engine to react to your throttle hand inputs.

how important in the test is the use of the lifesaver? i find its quite difficult to get all the way around and back in time and feel safer just double checking the mirrors

also is there anything else they make you do (non sexually Laughing)on the test which needs practising?

thinking of booking before the new test comes in,i found it quite hard to pass my car test (took 4 times) and im assuming the bike test will be the same Sad

if you dont use your life savers you will fail, had lifesavers drilled into me all weekend with my DAS and its now second nature everytime i do something to do a quick life saver.

Just practice the maneuvers lots, do the U turns on cambered roads as well as flat ones. Make sure you do a life saver before indicating, and just before making the turns etc. They give minors for missing them, so you only have to miss a few and its a major fault, i.e a fail!
practice hill starts too etc etc

good luck man, im so glad to have mine done!

cheers, done a few hill starts, struggled at first but now i have the clutch control down they're easy

the lifesaver is where i will fail ...although having said that i thought i would forget my indicators everytime but i haven't left them on once yet (wasted £10 on an indicator buzzer which i havent bothered fitting lol)

i'll update once i nail the u-turns (then no doubt want advice on somthing else lol!

Dont know how U turns will be on your bike compared to the cbt bike you used.
But do a life saver over your right shoulder right before you begin the manouver, have revs and the clutch working nicely using the rear brake to control the speed, and just look down the road where you want to go and the bike will go round no bother.

If you pull the clutch in or look at the side of the road, you will end up in the gutter, look down and you will lose balance and your foot will go down leaving you with no speed control, which could also send you in the gutter etc etc

im a brand new rider, literally passed my test today, but iv had the test drilled into my head all weekend so if you want any more tips with the test let me know. though im sure the experienced people will have easier ways of doing things, all i know is what the instructor taught me Smile

My instructors told me that if i could nail a u-turn on my RS then i could do it easily on the 600s, however they state that due to the nature of the bike, ie being sat forwards instead of upright, the combination of keeping the bike moving with enough revs, countering the balance and finding a road wide enough for the RS large turning circle it will be fun to combat when compared to the CGs which turn a hell of alot easier!

is there no way you could do the test on a CG instead rather than your own bike, would make life a hell of alot easier as you can flick their bars round!! otherwise the instructors told me that on the RS id have to be more or less stood up, whilst leaning the bike under me to move my centre of balance against the bikes and with arms at full stretch in order to get it round a narrow road Shocked (could be coz im a short ass though...)

if you manage it, excellent you're set for anything!! Very Happy

on the test you have to walk the bike round first anyway so if you can't walk it round in the space provided - the examiner won't make you do a U'ey there anyway.

Practice in a straight line first - bring revs up to around 2k, slip the clutch so it's right on the biting point and then simply use the rear brake to control the speed. DON'T change the level of input on the clutch or the throttle at any point, merely dab the rear brake harder to slow yourself down, or release the rear brake slightly to speed yourself up.

Once you've done 400 yards or so in that way enough times - throwing a lifesaver in, and turning the bike becomes a doddle.

When actually doing your U turn - don't forget to check over shoulder before moving off; then go forwards in a straight line for about 3-4 car lengths just to get your clutch/throttle/brake into the right groove. Once you've got that, lifesaver, return head to straight forward momentarily and then look behind you again and WAAAAY up the road. Make the turn nice and smooth - keep the power constant. DON'T look at the kerb at all or you'll be on it.

Keep a relaxed grip on the bike, don't grip the bars too tight - grip the tank with knees instead. You can also counterbalance slightly by leaning over to the left when turning to the right - shouldn't really need to, but it will help if you want to take the U turn slower rather than keeping the speed up.

Good luck Thumbs Up

There is two variety of lifesaver. The first which I think you are attempting to do all the time is for pulling away form the curb and pulling off from your 'controlled stop', where you literally twist in your seat and look as far down the road as possible.

The second is the standard lifesaver while riding, which is a simple twist of the neck so your chin is more or less in line with your shoulder so you can check your mirrors blind spot.

You don't have to check behind you on the second type, just to the side of you and it needs to be a firm swift look so you can get your attention back to where the bike is heading.

Everytime you change direction you should throw a lifesaver in that direction to make sure no one has sneaked alongside you.

While on the subject aim to do 3 - 4 mirror checks a minute. Bob your head when you do them to telegraph it to the examiner. I checked my right, speedo and then left in one sweep.

They will probably say thank you for listening.

When you are pulled over to perform the Turn in the Road the examiner will request you get off of the bike and walk it round first off to demonstrate that the bikes turning circle is adequate.

no i meant if they asked you to do a U-turn and you took the next 3 lefts and a right.

didn't really practise much today as im more preocupied with getting to the 600 mile mark so i can open the bike up a bit, only 300 left!

The best advice for the U turn was given to me by the instructor. DON'T look at the curb if you do that's where you will go. The way I was taught is like this:

1 - Look clear down the road both ways to make sure it's clear
2 - Move forward to get your balance
3 - Just before you turn a quick life saver (chin to shoulder)
4 - as you are turning don't look at the curb look at something at the other end of the road and the bike should follow round nicely Thumbs Up

PS The RS has a pretty bad turning cycle especially compared to a CG Laughing

I used to think my J-series ZX6R was a bad bike for trying to do U-turns on, until i went to france and had to keep doing them in town centre's every time i got lost. After 5-6days U-turns were easy in roads that the bike would turn in with around 12-24" of extra space than the bike would phyically go around in.

Im sure a light weight RS125 would be easier than the ZX6 to do the same exercise on though!
