In that on the road its fine to tip toe about I could ride the 890mm africa twin on the road anywhere I wanted , I could just about get my toes down... which was ok when I came to a stop at traffic lights.

The CBR600's comparative 'wideness' also in effect shortens my leg a fair bit and I can only get one foot down and not completely either to get flat foot I have to lean off one side which isn't ideal.

But what about off road?

Ie sandy , muddy , rocky , gravelly conditions , how much of a handicap is it to not be able to flat foot one or both sides? .

This might well be the decider....

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks.

It depends a lot on your confidence; in some cases however tall you are, you may not be able to get your foot down easily (because there's a big hole where you foot is or you're on a slope, for instance). For general riding, it depends on your confidence, so may be best to learn on something a bit lower.

It can be hard to convince your body to do it, but it's often easier to ride faster, than slower with feet down. That way the bike is more stable and likely to keep going in a straight line.
It's fairly rare I have to put my feet down to paddle when I'm riding at my own peace; thick mud and stuff maybe, but that's less of an issue.
Remember a loaded bike will probably be a bit lower (though you should adjust preload to suit) anyway.

The CCM with trail wheels is /very/ tall (E model, so extra suspension travel) and I never had a problem with it with a bit of forward planning, though at sometimes did have to lean a fair way to get my down-slope foot down.

Most bikes can be tweaked to some degree anyway.

I think the best thing would be just to get out and start riding some trails to get used to it generally etc (and it's great fun Razz).
