Quick question; I'm about to buy some exhaust gaskets from Wemoto but they list both aluminium and copper gaskets for a 95 CBR600. They're the same price so which ones should I get? Is there any difference?

Get copper if they are the same price. Aluminium ones disappear into a pile of dust after a time and definately if you ever remove the exhaust.

You can sometimes even re-use copper ones if you anneal them. The original Honda ones will have been copper.

Thanks mate Karma

Is wemoto likely to be the cheapest place to get them? I'm also getting an oil filter and rear wheel bearing kit and assumed Wemoto was the cheapest but does anyone undercut them these days?

Not necessarily the cheapest but definately the most convenient.

You could also try David Silvers, sometimes the genuine Honda parts are cheaper than the pattern ones.

As ever, it's postage that does the dirty on the price.

Cheapest and best place for bearings is from a bearing factors, not a motorcycle spares place.

I'm assuming I need the full bearing kit though, as in dust seals and the sprocket carrier bearing too? Never done wheel bearings before, but you can feel and see the movement in the rear wheel, so will I need to replace all 3 bearings?

Not the ones sold by Wemoto and myself.

Aluminium gaskets are two Aluminium bands with paper between them. The paper is the compressable material. This type is good for filling large gaps and may be reusable if you don't compress tham too much.

The copper type is a pipe of copper formed into a ring. This type compress flat when used and cannot be reused as they compress and have no spring to them. Contrary to common belief they are not flat to begin with. This type is best for small gaps down to half a mm.

It's a thick enough bit of copper even when compressed to seal a well fitting header pipe providing you re-anneal it. I know this because there are six re-used copper gaskets on my VFR exhaust system and it ain't leaking.

I always use copper exhaust thingamajigs and for what they cost you might as well get new ones. I reckon Stinkers is just being a tight Scottish stereotype.Laughing

He does have a point though, you can anneal them and use them again as I have done it myself when strapped for cash. It doesn't expand them back to their original thickness, but just enough to do the trick. Wink

In my defense, I was fitting a new exhaust system and the last bolt I went to tighten went 'ping'.

I had to dismantle the whole lot (including removing the rear manifold) to effect a repair. I'd only bought one lot of washers so I annealed them all and refitted them. No leaks so all good.

The two under the manifold were the original ones it had on from when it was new.
