Hi all,

Been riding for a few months now, so im a fairly confident rider, been driving for over a year aswell. Had my test couple of weeks ago, and failed with 1 major on 'positioning on a roundabout'

I was told that I entered the roundabout correctly, signalling was fine, observations fine, and I left roundabout correctly, but I somehow managed to do something wrong in-between (something about not letting cars behind know my intentions and the examiner had to go in the left lane just as a precautinary thing).

Dont really know what i done wrong tbh, If anyone has any tips on roundabouts etc it would be helpful, have my second test tomorrow!

Thanks,

Sounds like you might have crossed in to the wrong lane half way round? Or you didn't indicate early enough? Or you didn't move over to turn off early enough? I have no idea I wasn't there Laughing

On all my practice test runs though I failed on the roundabouts. I wasn't scared of them or anything I just kept doing silly things wrong. They are a bit of a pain in the arse but great fun once you actually pass Thumbs Up Mr. Green

You've just got to really concentrate and get out and practice as much as you can doing everything correctly and purposefully

About 90% of cars don't do it right.

90? i'd go higher, problem is to get your license you have to do it properly on the day.

highway code not help? IIRC there are pages on the position you should be in

The examiners don't like you straight lining reoundabouts even though most of the time it is the safest thing to do. Next time go slower, stay in lane, and make plenty of observations, then go back to doing it safely Rolling Eyes

were you turning right at it by chance?

My guess would be that you kept too close to the middle of the RB for too long, allowing space up the inside for a car to occupy

I think your on the right lines there m8, examiner had to move to inside lane incase a car went there or something??

What does it mean though, staying close to the middle of the roundabout?

When you're turning right, once you get past the 2nd exit you should start to position yourself as soon as possible further towards the outside of the roundabout - or left hand lane if you like - so that if a car coming from the 2nd exit pulls into that space you don't end up fighting for the same road position as you come across from the right hand side to the left hand side to take your exit.

Make sense?

right that makes sense and could actually be my problem tbh.

i asked my instructors etc before, and generally they said that I should change lanes on exit rather than after the exit before the one im coming off from?

A bit like this perhaps - the smaller, broken line being the sort of position I imagine you took up, the longer unbroken one being the line perhaps the examiner was expecting to see

If the car came out of exit 2 (or even followed left hand lane from exit 1) and took up the left hand lane and ended up having to slow down because of you coming across, then yes that's a major. Does seem a harsh one, though - especially if the examiner hasn't given you satisfactory feedback on what to change to do it right.

it was something about a car was in the left hand lane and examiner moved over to the left 'just in case'.

rest of the riding was fine though. so heres hoping for tomorrow!

thanks for all advice so far really helpful!

From what you say it sounds like the exit on the roundabout had 2 lanes, when exiting you need to move over after the lifesaver to where your going not leave it late and cut the lane etc.
Ive been caught out doing that Embarassed

Straight lining a roundabout is a major on test.

I'm sorry. But roundabouts in this country are just confusing! I have better words to use than that- but I don't want to offend anyone!

I think I am doing what's right- but I make sure to keep a good eye on the space around me and what others are doing so I don't get mowed down.

hey all, i managed to spot my instrutor while i was out on my ride, I managed to follow him and asked him if he asked the examiner what was up with my test.

Seems that I was taking the third exit and stayed in lane pretty much till i left, but after i had passed second exit, a car had pulled out and was in the left hand lane.

So apparently the car in the left hand lane had to slow down as didnt know where i was going, and that I should have treated it a bit like a spiral roundabout and moved to the left hand lane straight after the 2nd exit.

Seems a bit harsh nonetheless getting a major for that!

thanks for all advice.

one you enter, and it magically takes you in the correct lane, you basically stay in your lane all round the roundabout and it unwinds you to your exit...
