Right now I'm in the middle of applying for jobs (through a fairly large national organisation - it doesn't take rocket science to work out which one tbh!) and in one part of the application it goes on about how they want you to fill in an equal opportunities form;

Quote:
We want to ensure that our job opportunities are open to all. The only way we can ensure there is equal opportunity is to monitor applications we receive, and compare the profile of people who apply with those appointed. Therefore this form asks you for your ethnic origin, gender, disability, religion, sexuality and age. The information you provide in this part of the form is confidential and is not used in the selection process. Although the form is optional, we do ask that you positively declare whether you are happy to complete the form or not. It is linked from left hand panel

Now am I getting the wrong end of the stick here, but i thought if they fully 'want to ensure that our job opportunities are open to all' then you make all things about the candidate anonymous so that the best person for the job gets the job. That sounds to me like it's giving everyone an equal opportunity! I mean they're actually asking questions about - and I quote them here - 'Gender Reassignment' ffs! What has that got to do with the price of fish?!

From what I can gather - or if I am to unquestionably believe what it is telling me - this form will not be looked at until after selection is over, at which point they can correlate all the results be able to say "Look people - we gave x number of jobs to gay folk and Jews! Aren't we such a good employer?!" Well, er, no. You'd be much better if you didn't feel the need ask irrelevant shit which does not relate to the job in the first place rather than shouting it from the rooftops - therefore creating and highlighting divisions/distinctions in what is probably one of the most a multiracial and multicultural employers in the country!

Needless to say, I'm going to be saying that I'm not happy filling out the form! Does anyone think that this may not be a wise move for whatever reason? Anyone got similar experiences?

[/rant]

Cheers, Stu

They aren't allowed to use it to decide whether or not they give you the job, they just monitor who they have given jobs to.

Usually there is a little piece of text on the form saying that you don't have to fill it in... but I'd be wary of not doing so if they say you have to fill it in. Whatever you do, DO NOT rant about it like you just have to the employer. This will not help your chances.

Positive action in encouraging people from under-represented backgrounds to apply for jobs is permitted, but it is illegal to discriminate in favour of them in awarding employment.[19] A form of affirmative action is used by the governing Labour Party, which uses All-women shortlists to ensure that more women are selected as election candidates. Controversial proposals to allow affirmative action in employment are currently being debated as part of a revising of the Equality Bill. [20]

They can't decide whether or not to give you the job based on your answers to those questions. They should give it to whoever is best qualified.

Well, as you know, plenty of brits struggling for work at the minute.

Ie plenty of choice for who to hire.

My place, I got hired, a Ukranian and a couple of immigrants from China I believe. We are also getting another 2 polish.

This is to compliment the masses of blacks, indians and europeans already working in my department.

Seriously, I'm THE white quota at my place.

Very bizarre.

I was looking to join the police and asked advice from a lass i work with as her fella is a copper. When i asked how hard it was for him to get accepted she said it's not too hard but then he got in much more easily because although they shouldn't they do give preference to ethnic minorities apllications.

Made me think twice about whether i wanted to be part of an organisation like that at all (i decided i didn't).

Just grit your teeth and fill it out , a job is better than no job , and with the current market as it is and its going to get MUCH worse I'd rather have money in my pocket than to be unemployed out of principle which nobody will take notice of anyway.

I had to deliver a degree lecture about 'Racial data' collection last week. There is a huge amount of this type of data gathered in the UK as there is a lot of monitoring to ensure that companies have a balance of employeee. France and Germany collect virtually none of this kind of data.

The form is a standard one. Even applying to colleges they ask these questions that you can chose not to fill in. It should not make any difference to your application what you do or do not put in that section.
Good luck!
