PostPosted: 16:42 - 29 Jan 2009    Post subject: Speed Camera NOOOOO! Reply with quote

Right before I start im not here to say im innocent or to look for sympathy, so if your gonna comment just to say 'shouldnt have been speeding' or w/e then jog on cause the chance that you have never been a few miles over the limit is pretty much 0%

Basically I was on my way back from uni today and went past the second of 2 speed cameras that I know are on my route and I always notice, and im in the bus lane just infront of another car not really paying to much attention to my speed as it seems like a perfectly safe speed for the road im on and it certianly isnt busy when BANG flash....FU@*ED I know whats just happened so i check my speed....an indicated 40mph...and im in a 30. Great what an idiot I am Sad

However its just really bugging me for 2 main reasons, a fine aint to bad, anoying but still, however 3 points will be quite upsetting especially seeing as ive only had my license about 2 months if that so ive still got ages till the end of the 2 year period so one more mistake = liscense gone, secondly its annoyed me that id do that half heartedly if you will. If i had been being an idiot and ragging it then more fool me but atleast it would hve felt more justified.... but thats life i suppose.

Basically just wanted to ask:
1) are motorbikes definatly allowed to use bus lanes in bristol? I have always been told so but just wanted to make 100% sure
2)do speed cameras flash at 30mph, or 35mph (30mph + 10% + 2mph) as im sure with an indicated 40mph on the clock i was only really doing about 35??
3)anybody got any tactics that could pay off for getitng out of it, like asking for the photo as your not sure whos driving etc? and hoping the cant be bothered?
4)anyone else wanna vent there annoyance about the smae?

Cheers

1) Think so.
2) Don't know.
3) Doubt it.
4) Shouldn't have been speeding. Wink

It had to be said though.

Now you have learnt the need for observasions. not just there to save your life and that of others but to save your license too.

They are a pain in the arse, but so too are those people who mindlessly drive/ride from one point to the other.

Oh by the way I have been done for speeding 4 times in the 25 years of riding, but never with a big yellow fuck off box over my head with warning signs and the knowledge of them being there. Use your cabbage mate.
i do hope for your sake it was the car that has been done and not you. just keep an eye on the postman for the next two weeks.

I know the feeling... I was going 95(ish) racing a honda Civic, Missus said "is that a speed camera?"

I let out more than a few expletives as I passed said camera at a stupid rate of knots. Spent 14 days going on and on about how crap speed cameras are, about how unfair the penalty points are, devising a plan to "get away with it"/plead for a higher fine and no points etc. Fortunately, nothing ever came through my letter box so I was happy as larry!

It was the points that bothered me more than the fine due to the repercussions (i'm a driver for a living). I cant remember when I was more worried than when I was waiting for the NIP telling me I'd get 6points/banned... needless to say I've "seen the light" Praying and now drive much more sensibly! (suppose you could argue the scameras have done their job!)

I did get nicked by a mobile scamera once doing 36 in a 30zone... I tried every trick in the book, including

Asking for evidence (they sent it)
Going to magistrates hoping they wont send all the relevant stuff and I could weasel out on failure to disclose (they sent it, I couldn't!)
Saying someone else was driving and I didn't know who it was (they say that as the owner of the vehicle you have to prove that the vehicle was insured no matter who was driving, hence you can't use foreigners either, otherwise they'll nab you for insurance violation.)

The last one worked for me though as the vehicle didn't belong to me and so I didn't have to prove it was insured. The photo was rear facing so I told them they had to prove it was me (in a grovelling "your honour" sort of way) and they had to let me go as at no point did I say I was actually driving (used words like "alleged"!) Dance!

Hope it all works out for ya fella, but these guys are pros at collecting monies and after 17years of scameras... they know all the tricks!

Yes you can use bus lanes in Bristol (except for a couple in the Center by the Hippodrome). Check the sign it should include a motorbike.

How many times did it flash? Only once, you may be OK.

Where were you flashed? For the want of a better phrase?

Bristol do "speed choice" so you can sit ina room for a day with bunch of numpties if you are lucky.

Its one of those time of day bus lanes, its like a bus lane 7-11 and 3 - 6 or similar. I didn't realise this so I'd been shouting and swearing at people for being in the bus lane for no reason Laughing.

My boss followed the advice on Pepipoo. He was caught on a speed camera doing 39 in a 30. When he received the NIP he waited the maximum time (28 days I believe) before sending it back unsigned. He then got sent a replacement, waited another 28 days and sent it back with his girlfriend's details but unsigned. He repeated for the 6 month period and never heard anything more about it and neither did he get points or a fine.

He's doing the same again the at moment (85 in a 70) and on the NIP he wrote (truthfully) "don't know driver number - license at DVLA to have motorcycle entitlement added". He was snapped by a camera van on a motorway bridge (I was in the car and everyone was doing 85 or so). He has had PCSOs at the door asking him to sign NIP but has not as of yet - he was snapped back in October.

It boils down to the seriousness of the "offence" and the resources available to the Police/Procurator Fiscal/CPS to chase you. It may be that if you show a bit of resistance, coupled with a busy Police force they will put you in the "too much hassle" pile.

Get yourself over to Pepipoo.com and ask for advice.

A while ago someone on BCF posted an e-book "Save your driving license" that advised on other strategies, but I can't find the thread. Maybe someone has it downloaded...?

Good luck anyway.

Seeing as your a new driver, you may get offered a driver improvement course (well, i think it is more a case of first offence, rather than being a new driver)

I don't know if its only particular councils that offer it, but my local council (kirklees) do. But like others have said, it may not of even had any film in it, most scameras will flash you if you speed past, even though they may not have film in it.

I live in west yorkshire and i heard (not sure how true it is) that there are only 4 cameras in the whole of west yorkshire and they just switch them between the yellow boxes every so often. (Although, i think that only applies to normal scameras, the digital ones are permanantley working)

a teacher from my high school once got flashed while driving the a1 and tried to get my mate to pay the fine as he'd warned the twit about the camera but they still got flashed Shocked
one point about forward facing cameras: can they do bikes? i know they take a pic and that can be used to id you but it's not easy. what's the risk of being caught out if a forwards facing camera goes off?
been driving 8 years and no points but the fuzz did try to yank my licence a year after i passed becuase they didn't bother to check my docs and just fined me for no test or insurance. too 3 months to solve. Evil or Very Mad
