Just wondering - whats the deal with motorbikes and toll bridges?

Today i went over the Clifton suspension bridge in Bristol twice and each way just tailgated a car under the barriers because I didn't fancy having to dig around in my pockets for change, but I'm now slightly worried I've been caught on camera and will be fined?

Or worse, have points on my license? But that does seem a little ridiculous.

If you know your going over a toll bridge (not sure why anyone wouldn't) you get the money ready and pay, it's only 50p. If you have been caught then it could be a fair bit more. Wink

I go over one just out side of Hay-on-Wye quite often. They come out and say somthing to me but I can never hear what it is because of the engine. sometimes I just ride off and at other times I chuck a quid on the floor and then ride off.
Stupid idea.

The Dartford Crossing (M25) usually wave bikes through.

The tight gits on the M6 toll charge for bikes.

I was surprised to find it free for all to get out of Wales on the Severn Crossing. But you pay going the other way into Wales.

Not on a bike you don't.

Mind you I suppose if you give them money they could always buy a kit-kat.

Seeing as it's marked up as free on all the signage, I should hope they do! Wink

North Wales has loads of toll roads, they collect the money via yellow boxes on poles.

Heh I first read this as troll bridges, but in my experience many bridges are free for bikes but you must stop at the toll booth.

It was free on the Torpoint bridge.

Tamar Bridge (Torpoint is the ferry Itchy, that's 20p Razz) is free. But you are supposed to stop at the barrier then they'll open it. Usually if you are following a car they'll hold it open and wave you through though, and even if you aren't if they see you coming they usually open it so you don't have to stop.

Followed a car up to it once but they guy didn't wave me through so I slowed up, as being bonked on the noggin by a barrier didn't appeal- miserable git then shouts "get a fucking move on" to me from his booth Rolling Eyes

Toll booth on the ferry? , it used to be a guy in waterproofs who went around hassling everybody for money while the ferry was in transit.

Aren't you supposed to only pay the ferry man when it gets to the other side?

Or you could see it as Wales only allowing those with money into the country.
It all is part of our plan to keep the riff-raff out.

But there again it's free to leave.

When the Severn Bridge first opened legend has it that there was a charge of 20p each way for motorbikes.
The Bristol and Cardiff branches of MAG got together and arranged a simultaneous bridge crossing, attacking it from both sides.
Each biker was to queue in line, then remove helmet and gloves, search for the coins then wait for their change before replacing helmet & gloves, remounting bike, starting engine then pulling away.
This caused such chaos that the owners of the Severn Bridge relented and gave free access to bikers.

Found this while searching for any evidence to back up this story:

https://www.network.mag-uk.org/september_01/BridgeTolls.html

Edit/ just took a better look, in 2001 it was £4.40 for a car on Severn Bridge today it's £5.40!

Haven't they already earnt the cost of building the bridge like 10 times over or something?

Didn't they open it with the intentions of only charging to cross it untill they had covered the cost?

Or this could all be whispered rumours. Laughing

It's still a bloke in waterproofs on the Torpoint Ferry, don't worry Laughing

He still goes around hassling you for money too. Some things will never change I suspect...

The severn toll's are great, especially if there's a few of you get to different barriers at the same time. The race to get out first before it goes to 3 lanes is tops Thumbs Up .

It's the same at the Dartford tolls.

Or the Dartford Drag strip as I like to call it. Cool
