Over the past week I've been phoned regularly each evening by somebody claiming to be my bank manager (yeah right) and each night I tend to mess with them.

Which bank ? , who are you etc..

I played with them nicely tonight and said sure I bank with Halifax my sort code is 02-06-08 (fake) and my account number is 0125fek you and put the phone down..

I'm sure I'm supposed to do something like report these instances and report it right ?.

Any thoughts?

Ta.

EDIT surely people can't be conned with such a silly and obvious phishing expedition right?.

Unfortunately, they must have a degree of 'success' else it wouldn't pay them to keep calling. My folks are getting a bit too old to cope with all this sort of thing and it's my biggest fear that they will fall for it. I'm forever telling them how bad and corrupt the world is getting in an attempt to protect them and keep them on the ball.

Trouble is my folks can't understand the actual real Bank when they call either which has led to suspected fraud on their accounts not being resolved immediately and their cards being stopped - it's very irritating as I keep having to go to the Bank with them to sort it all out. Wrinklies, eh!? Rolling Eyes

If only people in general weren't so dense a few will fall for the stupidity it wouldn't happen.

From morons, TO morons.

Ignore it, and it will go away, and yes report it if the number is the same each time.

I can also modify your credit card to make it unskimmable just send me your card and pin number and a return address

And because i know you ill do all this free of charge

It's like Fonejacker Laughing

There is a pigun in you banc akahnt
We need yuhr sort code an card numbah to go in and clean yuhr monies

We get phishing emails now and then, and I can understand how older folks would fall for these scams sometimes

On a similar note we get phone calls ALL the time from a finance company who know how much we owe on our mortgage etc... Apparently a company sold all our details a couple of years ago 'by accident'. Shocked Thanks for that. They gave us a free credit check as an apology. We know our credit history. Thanks anyway

Am I being very dense? there is an attempted crime being commited on a regular basis, I do not know for certain if you have these people in other parts of the UK but in Brum we have chaps called Police who are paid to sort this kind of thing.

Arial were in the uk.

The best we can expect from the police is a crime number and a victim of crime leaflet through the post telling us not to commit suicide. Neutral Thumbs Down

Not at all, if they were trying to steal from you I would agree but the ultimate victim is not you but the bank. The police are there to maintain financial stability and state security not individual freedoms, for fear of sounding like Hester they will be interested.

My aunt had her details stolen and things bought on her card. She managed to trace an address where the deliverys where going and contacted the police and all they did was ask a couple of questions gave her a crime number told her to give it to her bank. A few days later she got a leaflet telling her not to top herself.

Then she contacted her bank who sorted it all out although they did say Ahhh we were expecting your call WTF They had apparantly been monitoring the account for a couple of days.

The problem is all the calls are withheld numbers , so its not as if I can trace them or anything.

And yes I've been a victim of crime several times, push bike has been swiped a few times, beatings here and there, etc..... cop has a word and sends you a leaflet coping with being a victim of crime or was it so you've been a victim of crime.

I've generally thrown them in the bin in disgust , I'm just finding it annoying TBH.

If the authorities know about the calls they will be able to easily trace them. They only withhold from you.

I believe this is only the case for UK based calls, if the calls are from overseas BT cannot trace them, apparently. My phone doesn't accept withheld numbers, however I do get calls from overseas and they are the ones who told me to 'fvck off' when I asked them not to call Evil or Very Mad BT logged my complaint but couldn't actually trace or do anything at the moment, but told me this would be changing in the future Thumbs Up

Far better to contact the company that the goods were bought from as they are the one's who will endup out of pocket.

Why did she wait so long to contact the bank.... If there is anything you don't remember on your account, they should be the 1st point of contact.... Shocked

Banks monitor accounts 24/7/365 for fraud. Trouble is untill a customer can confirm one way or the other, they are unable to do anything.

Unless it's HSBC and then they just cancel all your cards without telling you because they have the wrong 'phone number on record! Rolling Eyes

Very inconvenient, but better than ending up out of pocket while they sort it all out. Wink

A bank can up in very serious trouble if its stops a card without good reason.
Often a block is placed on a card to force a person to call in, like you get to the check out and card gets declined, the shop should call the authorisation center to find out what the problem is. You should than be allowed to make the transaction, but be advised to call your bank ASAP.

These blocks are not placed lightly, and are only placed when its 99.9% certain that fraud has taken place or there is a very high risk of it taking place.

Many people do not understand that a block on a card is not cancelling it, it is a means to a end, and one not taken lightly to get a customer to respond to messages.

As to wrong phone number, it is upto you to ensure that they know your numbers....
Sadly no one has devoloped a system where you can enter a persons name and it will bring up their new numbers on their mobiles they seem to change every year.....

It was cancelled as Mum and I tried to book flights for her online and when asked for an issue number (there isn't one) we had to enter as it wouldn't allow us to leave it blank and we got it wrong!! Apparently booking flights online is considered a high fraud risk, despite having to give your full name and address Rolling Eyes as is stopping in hotels in Wales Laughing

Parents had moved and number had been updated but they said they tried and couldn't get an answer but when investigated further they hadn't actually called at all.

Got a big long grovelly letter, but this is the second time this has happened - difficult to get very cross as they are trying to protect us too, but very frustrating.

If you ever have payment issues ring the bank, HSBC is avaiable pretty much 24/7 via telephone or online messaging.

Air tickets is a very common fraud, problem is the lack of security by the airlines, who allow people to purchase tickets that are not in the card holders names and addresses.
Quite how these people can board a plane is strange as they should have to produce the card to confirm payment details.....

In reality and if all online retailers played by the rules they have to abide by, they should only take orders in the card holders name and deliver to the card holders address....
Of course retailers say that they are offering a better customer service by flouting these......
Shame they play right into the fraudsters hands.... And cost the rest of us a hell of a lot of money as they have to load ALL prices to cover their losses due to fraud, that they could very easily prevent.

I'm not so sure about that my dad who is over 60 these days doesn't have a credit card and won't get one, when he needs to take a flight anywhere he calls ME to book a flight for him somewhere in the world and send him the reference number, he puts it back into my bank account.

Atleast they know your not one to get fooled. Unless you have just been fooled, which would be good in a purely comical sense.
