Hi all

Planning on getting a new ER-6F
As I am young and only been riding 6 months, insurance is a killer.

So I want to ask about security to help insurance

Security Markings
Data Tag or Alpha Dot?
Is one better than the other for insurance purpose or are they both equal?

Alarm / Immobiliser
With Cost of, compared to insurance discount, any recommendations?

Any other tips and tricks to help insurance?

what you could do is run a few quotes , change a couple of the options so for e.g. say you have DATA TAG then see what the cost is.

Then say you have ALPHA DOT and see if it makes any savings.

And just carry on like that and see what kind of prices get thrown up.

You only get discount for one security item fitted not each one. So you could have the best chain, Alarm, Disc lock and DataTag but you only get the discount on the highest Thatcham rated product. Otherwise every inexperienced rider would fit every security item to the bike to save money on the policy.

Post code and where you keep the bike can make a difference as can voluntary excess.

I don't think that increased security will make much diffrence. Might see 10% if you are lucky.

Your main problem's are....

Age,
Experiance
Cost of Bike,
Type of Bike,
Postcode..

I don't rate extra security for insurance discount at all !
On my R6 I had the top of the range Meta Alarm/Imobilser fitted (about £300)and it gave me a £30 a year discount on my £630 a year policy.
I very much doubt a Datatag etc would make much difference and if such a alarm made such little difference how much are highly rated locks etc goin to make ?
If you do tell your insurance company it has X Y Z kinda lock on it and the one time you don't put it on and somethin happens how will that effect the company paying out ?
The best way is to play about on the online quotes web pages to find out.
I know a car is different but I get £10 a year discount on my £450 per year car policy for putting my car in a garage at night !!
Insurance companies want you to add all this extra security but from what I can see they don't offer worthwhile discounts !
Let us know how you get on and what discounts you are offered ! Wink

Be careful with this as I thought it meant you could give the money if you felt like it, it does not.
What it means is that if you claim you have to pay voluntary excess on top of your compulsory.
so say now your excess was £200 but you gave a voluntary excess of £500 because it lowered your premium you now have to pay £700 in the event of a claim...
Giving a voluntary excess doesn't make much difference to the premium, at least with me it didn't, I chose no voluntary and my premiums all stayed the same.
Try calling this company: 0800 035 4758.
They do all the leg work for you and put you in touch with different insurance companies which are known to give good deals.
Due to me being 19 most companies were trying to fob me off with £650 excess.
I am now insured with MCE on my 650 for £270 with excess of £200, this includes legal cover and full break down Thumbs Up .
Cheaper than on my 125 beginibeginningst year!

Indeed.

If you're worried about money, go for an old SV worth about £1k I reckon. Insurance would be cheaper for an older bike even if it was worth the same, but being worth less you can go for TPO more reasonably and have a lot more money left over in total.
Bike is pretty close, and could be made a fair bit better than the ER with a few relatively cheap mods.
