This is for a friend, we shall call him friend D. Other charactors are aquaintances A (long term aquaintance) and B(A's friend) who are not really friends, just people who we are forced to occasionaly put up with for social reasons.

Friend D was in town a few months back and had a little too much to drink with A and B, after leaving the bar A and B decided to push over a very large indoor plant pot and tree, which predictably smashed and went everywhere. A and B pegged it before D really noticed what was happening, D was apprehended by security and passed on to the police.
From what i can tell next the police took advantage of friend D's inebriated state and gave him an ultimatum, either admit to destruction of property and recieve a fixed penalty notice of £80 or be charged with Drunk and Disorderly and face a night in the cells, friend D works for the bank of england and a charge of Drunk and disorderly would mean loosing his job.
So friend D admitted to doing something he didnt and recieved the fine, knowing full well that A would not pay any money towards this friend D went ahead and payed the fine.
A week later friend D gets a call from her majesties finest explaining that the fine has not gone through and needs to be repaid and that the original money will be refunded to his account within 7 days. Friend D payed the 2nd £80 and assumed it was over with.
Cut to this morning, as of yet the 1st £80 has not been refunded, to add insult to injury friend D has just recieved a letter stating that as the fine has not yet been payed they now want a further £120.
So not only has friend D already payed up £160 for something he didnt do, he's now looking at paying a further £120!

What is the reccomended action, i owe friend D alot as a friend so i'd like to be able to repay him at least a little, i figure this is one way.

thanks

Just so you know, A also owed my my friend (the_godfather off here) a sum of money yet continued to spend cash left right and centre on things like car speakers and trips to the local strip club.

We have since shown A "the errors of his ways" in a way which he understood very well Whistle (make of that what you will, chances are you're on the wrong lines), he has stopped being so stupid now, although theres still no chance of getting friend D's money from him.

How did he pay both lots of £80? Confused

All he needs to do is front up with his proof of payment and it should all be sorted out.
