Hi all,
I've been seeing on here some people saying that they didnt believe you needed a certificate in your name to prove the bike was restricted. I have JUST, as of 230pm today, become the proud owner of a 2001 GPZ500S, already restricted, but with the certificate in a previous owners name, so I wanted to check this out for sure, coz Im too skint to afford any sort of fine etc!

I first checked with FI International, who do the kits, and they said that I HAVE to get a new certificate via an authorised main dealer for £25.00+VAT, which also covers entry onto their database.

I thought "screw that, I'm not paying £25 out if I dont have to", so dug a bit deeper, and found the Police National Legal Database website, and asked the question on that.

Their answer, in full, was the following:
"David

The main point is that you have to have some satisfactory way of showing
the bike is restricted. If the police are not satisfied they will take the
vehicle to do a dyno check, which is a load of grief/inconvenience for you.
I would check see if the original issuer of the installation certificate
will issue a fresh one in your name (as that is obviously the best option),
but they can try it on a bit cost wise.

If it is an outrageous price, you could continue with the previous owner's
certificate assuming it identifies the bike and the engine number. If you
are still in touch with the previous owner, you could ask for the receipts
etc. to help verify it was a genuine bona fide restriction.

That is the situation from the police point of view, but your insurance
company needs to be consulted as to what they require."

As far as i'm concerned this means that having a certificate in the name of the previous owner means Im legal on the road, and if I get through the interview tomorrow, I can commute to work!

Hope this helps anyone else in the same boat

Cheers

You're legal anyway, certificate or not.

The only law is that you are restricted to 33bhp, it doesn't say anything about having to prove it.

FI International suck!!

I got screwed over for this and it is a total con. If you are confident that the bike puts out 33bhp or less then you are absolutely fine. If the police want to dyno it they can and it will prove your compliance.

Don't let them bully you.

Hi

No certificate at all would still not render you not legal on the road. The police can decide they want to check it if they want, certificate or not.

A certificate is not proof that the bike is 25kW legal.

All the best

As that says if the policeare not happy they will take the bike for testing.....

Even if you hold a bit of paper that says it is..... Lets face it any fool can knock up a bit or paper that has all the reverlent info on it....

Search back in this forum and you will find a blank copy you can edit to suit you....
Failing that if you have a scanner, scan the one you have and edit the name....

Saves spending all that money on a cough, legal Laughing or one of the iffy ebay ones....

You sure the last owner hasn't let the restrictors 'fall out'? Could be worth a dyno run if you want to make sure, that would cost as much as the F1 International certificate alteration and have as much legal standing as it.

It was copied from this certificate that someone kindly posted up in another thread.

My one for the Hornet looks entirely different... It's a red piece of paper and has loads more writing on it...

Also, when my Hornet decided to kill itself and pole vault me the Police wanted to "investigate" and a guy came round my house and talked. Had the certificate (my mum paid for it) so it was an eays done deal.

I asked him if I could restrict the bike say using a throttle stop to make it under 33bhp as the FI is silly money.

He said the FI certs make it easier to see if the bike is restricted as he had my certificate number and stuff but as long as it's restricted and proved to have under 33bhp than it's legal.

Not that It ever stopped me Laughing

If you need a satisfactory way then you may as well just knock yourself one up in word. Wink

That's also the opinion of a copper, and we all know how much they know about the restriction law. Rolling Eyes
