Bonjour,

Am considering moving into my own place within the next couple of months, and I’m trying to gauge how much money I’ll have going out/coming in once all bills/rent/etc are paid off. Wherever I go it will be rented, so Im just wondering if the older/wiser amongst you would be able to give me an indication of the average rates per month. Initially im assuming that I’ll be living on my own, although the missus may join me at some point.

Cheers guys,

GhostRider

Cool, what about when you take food into consideration?

3 bedroom terrace, Northampton area, 1.5 people, £237.95 a month.

£104.00 Community charge
£40.00 Electric
£25.00 Gas
£23.00 Water
£34.00 Sky (incl broadband & phone)
£11.95 TV Licence

You also need to consider household stuff like looroll, bleach, soap, shampoo, washing up liquid etc. Add maybe another £50, unless you like quilted kitchen towels with pictures on them, and 10 ply bogroll with aloe vera.

On top of that we have contents and buildings insurance (£24) which you might not want/need. Then there's car/bike insurance/tax/servicing, mobile phones, etc., but they shouldn't be any different to what you have now.

Food varies, when my wife is away I live on maybe a tenner a week; when she's home we do more takeouts/go out so around £50 a week. All depends on your comfort zone.

Including all toiletries and house cleaning stuff, I think £50/week all in is a bit conservative - unless you are a 'value' man and live on beans on toast and never clean the bog or wash your clothes!! Wink

I think £10/DAY PP (£70/week) is a bit more realistic all in ... you could easily spend double or treble that if you have expensive tastes ...

I'd budget £300/month for food and other supermarket stuff. If you are frugal, you might get nearer £200, but I doubt it Wink

Basically it will cost you ~£1,000/month to leave mummy and daddy and have your own place!!

You obviously then need to consider other expenses like insurances, transport, clothes blah blah blah, but the OP was about renting and associated 'house' costs ...

Oh and you haven't even gone down the pub/'romanced' a/your lady yet!! Wink

The £50 a week was just food, and the £50 a month for household stuff is quite a lot of overkill, it's probably more like £20.

There are places you can rent where the bills are included in the renting of the place

https://www.easyroommate.com

Rent a room off someone, quite a lot of them include bills. I'm probably moving in with some students shortly, which will be awesome if they're hot.

It depends how you do it but if you manage to get into a student house then the bills will be a lot lower because there'll be more ofyou sharing the cost.

Food, I'd estimate £60 a week if you're shopping without really watching prices, it can be done for a lot less but it gets boring fast. Toiletries, not that expensive, I'd guess around £20 a month.

Just be aware that if you do move in with a load of students and you are not a student, you will be liable for "all" of the council tax as they dont pay but you do, if its a big student house this will cost a fortune!

In my student days, everyone moved in with their mates. There were several, who were mental, who were left behind. One or two stayed in the halls again, the others had to form a strange club and live together.

Moving into a student house may see you living with weird ones or foreign ones. I'd reckon all the hot / popular / fun ones wouldn't need an 'outsider' to fill a room.

Wot he said.

Students don't pay council tax, and the single occupancy discount is 25% or thereabouts, so if it's you and a bunch of students in a house, then you'll be paying 75% of the council tax for a 4-5 bedroom house. Lorra wonga.

Surely he won't get the single occupancy discount as it is occupied by more than 1 person, therefore its 100% tax i.e. no discount and he will cop ALL of it?!!? ... The point made above is that it is a double whammy as it will be much more on a multi bed house than a scuzzy 1 bed flat too ...

Yep i made that mistake for a year (2003), as it was a student house i wouldnt have to pay, but then i dropped out of uni, I got collared by bailiffs about two months ago. They`d been chasing me since 2003 and it had gone all the way through to a court with a warrant out for me Shocked
Stupid thing was, I gave them my previous address on the council tax form in the new place after that one, so why it took em three years and a court case to get hold of me, i`ll never know? A simple letter would have sufficed Rolling Eyes

That was an unexpected bill the week i moved in to another new place, having just paid first months rent and deposit.

Thats one hell of a daft loophole where you would be liable for a disproportional amount of council tax, surely that should be looked into, if I didn't know what a joke most councils are, I might actually be surprised.

We pay on a single bed semi, between two of us:

Arrow Mortgage £910 monthly
Arrow Water £22 monthly
Arrow Gas quarterly, worst one since mid 07 has been £150
Arrow Electric quarterly, worst one since mid 07 has been £165
both most recent bills annoyingly enough
Arrow TV licence £35 quid, 4 random months of the year
Arrow Broadband + Phone £26 monthly
Arrow Council Tax £1100 a year, paid once yearly (monthly bills get expensive enough).
Arrow Commuting Diesel £60/month
Arrow Food (don't keep proper track because its scary, but probably £200 a month easily just for me). Lots of microwave meals and petrol station lunches = Expense.

On top of this, we have road tax and insurance for total of 4 vehicles between us, which is also probably a stupid amount.

Any extra diesel/petrol for special trips, diesel is 15p a mile approx at current prices.

Rare nights out, alcohol, having what's left of a life all comes out of what is left, which isnt much.

Stay at home, enjoy the lack of responsibility while you can. Thumbs Up

My personal circumstances, for a family of 4 in a 3 bedroom detached house in rural Gloucestershire:

Rent: £575.00
Council Tax: £79.00
Gas & Elec: £80.00
Phone: £17.00
Broadband: £15.00
TV Licence: £11.95
Water rates: £39.45
Contents Ins: £5

(all averages and water rates/council tax are only payable for 10 months, contents ins I pay in one go)

Total: £744.19

Food/Housekeeping: £100/wk

So around £1200 per month in total Neutral

Hey,
I live in a one bedroom flat in Grimsby with my Fiancé.

Currently we are paying:

Rent: £360 PCM
Council Tax: £90 per month
Gas and Electricity: £45 per month
Water: £28 per month
TV Licence: £22 per month.
Internet: Free thanks to the young lady above my flat who hasn't secured it Surprised

Car Fuel: £60 per month
Food: £120 per month
Insurance: £40 per month

Grand Total=£765 per month, including Travel and Food expenses.

As i live with my Fiancé we split all bills so i only pay £500 a month. I'm only on 800 per month though so it doesn't leave a lot to play with! Just enough money for the odd night out on the p*ss and my gym membership.

Cheers,
Shaun.

It totally depends on what sort of lifestyle you want to live. We have low outgoings (approx £600 for everything including mortgage, bills and food) but then splash out on holidays, nice meals here and there and the odd big purchase.

Food shopping can make a big difference, you can make huge savings without having to cut out the good stuff entirely, simply by buying Tesco value on items that are the same as the branded stuff. Buy in bulk, cook in bulk, freeze stuff, don't buy ready made sandwiches etc.

As we don't drink (apart from the occasional whiskey and coke) and don't smoke this saves shit loads of money too.

The initial costs when you first move out are quite scary, so I recommend that you save first. Stuff that you don't think about somehow needs to be bought. I remember being traumatized about spending £50 on kitchen stuff (mop bucket, kettle, washing up bowl, iron etc) and being gutted that my 24th birthday present was a pair of ladders... Rolling Eyes

Good luck Thumbs Up

Would love to move out, but really dont want to go into a bedsit, only thing i could afford maybe is a studio flat, but only taking home £190 i dont think with all bills, and car insurance/gym/phone i would even be able to afford that.

Need a new job.
