Bah! Who needs fancy tax disc holders?!

Just made a photocopy of my tax disc and then laminated both it and the original Laughing

Will keep the original stashed somewhere, knowing my luck some chav will have stolen the copy by the end of the week, maybe a bit of duct tape will keep it in place........... Twisted Evil

Mine's bolted to the back of the bike. But it's only a photocopy, so I'm not bothered if anyone nicks it (not that they've tried to yet).

Even though your carrying the original, Just be careful that some jobsworth copper doesn`t see the photcopied tax disc and nick you for displaying a fraudulant (not original) tax disc, as the potential penalties, could be higher than not displaying 1.
It would be easier to just keep the original in your pocket, & nowt on the bike the PNC system will flag it up as having valid tax, should you be pulled for not displaying, and you`d be able to talk your way out by showing the copper the RFL in your pocket

Well it's a very good photocopy! Only problem with not displaying one at all is leaving the bike parked up am I likely to get a ticket off a traffic warden or do they not have that power any more? It's frustrating that we have to display discs even though they have all the details on their wonderful Big Brother database (which only rarely messes up).

Think I'll just pop the real one in my main riding jacket and explain that due to the high crime rate involving delinquent youths (aka Chavs) I am unable to display the tax disc for more than 24 hours without it being stolen....... Rolling Eyes

Although not perfect, I would`ve thought a quick check on th PNC would prove the bike is taxed. IMO sticking a laminated note on the bike stating "there is a valid RFL for this bike (reg No 123 ABC.. exp 31/02/09 etc), but due to potential theft issues by leaving it on the bike, it is in possesion of the rider please contact mobile 07********* to enquire

This topic comes up every so often and I am still curious as to why people are concerned about the theft of tax disc from a bike, but aren't from a car.

To steal my bikes tax disc the thief needs tools or to break the steel backing - to steal a cars he only needs a brick...

Is it just because bikes have nothing around them that they feel more vulnerable?

I think it's because smashing a car window is a lot more violent and attention grabbing than simply fiddling away with a spanner at the front of a bike for a short while. Bike's are probably seen as an easier target by the criminal fraternity.

Suppose it depends on what tax disc holder you have.

On mine it doesn't lock closed, to take the disc out you just peel the rubber seal from around the edge and remove it.

who steals tax disks now anyway, they aren't worth anything unless they go the full hog and clone your plate.

unless someone can enlighten me as to what i am missing?

mine wasn't even secure on my old bike, just a simple holder that you can pull apart with your hands.

That logic has never really protected car radios, or if the local Police are to be believed small change under a couple of quid if it is on view.

You can cash them in at the post office without an ID I beleive.

My tax disk is mounted on my bike, in the shitty black tax disk holder that came with it.

Thing is, It's mounted inside one of the front tank shrouds. You can't really see it.

Also, I dont leave the bike anywhere other than INSIDE My workshop at work, Or INSIDE my house, at home. Razz

i've photocopied mine and laminated and put it under the seat (the base of the seat has a compartment which ideal for paperwork) and have left the tax disc holder on the bike with no tax disc or cover. if it ever gets mentioned i'll tell them there was a photocopy which was stolen (hence the empty tax disc holder, without a front) and the original is no the bike.
