Hey, how long does it usually take for motorcycle insurance to come into effect when doing it on the internet; is it instantaneous or does it take a day or two.

I'm just REALLY keen to get on my bike as soon as I (hopefully) pass my CBT (I'm told it's pretty impossible to fail, I hope they're right) and apparently I have to pass my CBT before getting my insurance Sad.

Cheers

When you get a quote you have to choose a start date for the policy. If the start date is the day you are doing the quote and you buy the policy online right away then its valid immediately i would have thought.

But lets says you choose a specific date, e.g the day after, then it will usually be valid from 00:01 on that date Thumbs Up

Technically you need to have a copy of the cover note or ins cert to be able to ride on the roads.

Now with the advent on online ins, you could print one off and be going in a few mins.

I didn't realise this until a few weeks ago, and strict reading of the law would suggest that possibly a cover note does not comply with the regulations.

Section 147 of the 1988 road traffic act

All the best

when you take out insurance with carole nash they email full policy anyways... i'm not sure if this counts for the stuff you're talking about - don't have time to read it now... Would probably end up having to read it a few times to understand Smile...

i know if you take it out by phone it's straight away, i would have thought if it was online you may have to wait till 12 am or pm for it to take effect maybe but dunno... never been a problem for me in the past.

As long as they give your a policy number via e-mail and you said that the policy is going to start from a specific date you are covered .

If it is the actual certificate it does count (well, once you have received it), just not 100% sure that a cover note counts as a certificate.

No technically true. You are only regarded as insured under the road traffic act when the insurer has delivered the certificate of insurance to the insured.

All the best

Really? I bought my bike in the morning and called Bennetts up and asked them to start my insurance from 3pm that afternoon (when I was going back to pick it up). They said I was covered from then.

Check the link for the relevant bit of the road traffic act above. Suspect in reality you would be fine, and suspect you would be covered, but also technically from the point of the offence of riding without insurance you are not covered.

It certainly isn't a well thought out bit of the legislation.

All the best

Yeah... especially given you have seven days to produce your documents!

If in that narrow little space of time before the documents arrived you had a mishap, you could still produce a certificate showing that you were insured at the time!

Of course, in my case the bike wasn't taxed either so I had to ride it home and then just look longingly at it in the garage for a week until the insurance docs came through anyway.

It's due to having to be able to produce your documents. if you can't because they're not in your possession then you shouldn't really be on the road

In reality, as kickstart says - it'll be fine.

Hi

If they came though.... Murphys law, that is the time there is a postal strike Wink .

Also technically you do not have 7 days to produce the documents. The offence is commited by not producing them on the spot, but it is a valid defence (I've forgotten the exact legal wording) to produce them within 7 days at a specified police station.

All the best

Keith

This all sounds completely different to everything I thought was the case for the last seven years of driving.

I have had a car crash many years ago, and as I don't carry my insurance stuff around with me (who does?) I just had to present it (with MOT, etc) at the police station within seven days.

*confused*

As kickstart says above - within 7 days is allowable defence of the offence which is not carrying your documents. It is actually an offence.

Hi

Virtually nobody does carry their docs, but technically it is an offence not to present them to the police on demand. But that is ludicrous to enforce (can you imagine what a soggy mess your bike insurance docs would be after 9 months of riding in rain), hence the clause that you will not be convicted if you provide them within 7 days (few other get outs as well):-

Section 165 of the 1988 Road Traffic Act

All the best

Save the trouble of having to find a police station open round here, should you be stopped.

Ah, that makes sense now, thanks Keith. Everywhere says 'you have seven days' but leaves out the bit about it being an offense!

I suppose you'd need to carry your MOT, V5 and counterpart licence (I always have the photocard in today's Challenge-21-for-a-beer world) in order to get away with not having to visit the police station later, yes? That's really unworkable - I took my counterpart with me to Greece in case the car rental wanted it and just sitting folded with my passport it got ruined!
