After coming accross this kr for the grand total of £0 and 0p i decided to make a start building it up and replacing stuff.

When i got it it was almost in bits, loads of stuff is broke or missing but there is enough of it to make a complete bike.

I'm going to be doing this without spending a lot of money so a few bodges will be done and a few bits stolen from my other bikes.

The pics are crap as the sister has stolen the camera for the day and i'm having to make do with the mobile.

First thing was the brakes, or lack of. I did these first as i can do them without spending any money.

Edit: for some reason i can't post my pics in order, so i'll have to do them separately.

Next thing was the calipers on the front. Although they look clean i thought i would do them anyway.

Next thing was to bleed the buggers, took me almost 4 hours! I tried connecting a tube to the nipple and sucking, but i got a mouthful of fluid.

After i bled them i couldn't get the pistons to go back in. I tried one of those squeezy clamp things but they wouldn't budge. I finally got a big g-clamp on the job and it worked. The pistons moved about 1mm then i heard a huge bang and a massive jet of fluid shot out of the return hole in the master cylinder. It turns out it was blocked. It went all over the ceiling, the floor and the bike, and even in my drink! The mother went bonkers before i could get a pic and made me clean it up. She didn't see the funny side.

tomorrows adventures are the rear caliper and the rear shock. stay tuned for more updates.

congratulations on a bargain there.......
btw its a kr1,not a kr1s,you can tell by the 2 pot front calipers and indents in the main frame.
to be honest it looks in pretty good condition overall Thumbs Up .
a set of 1s barrels and pipes should give a good power increase(even the pipes on their own work well)
have fun with the suspention linkages,i've just rebuilt mine and the bearings and seals alone came to over £150 !!!!
here's my kr1s as i got her....
https://w4.bikepics.com/pics/2009/01/31/bikepics-1556250-full.jpg
as she is now,but only more so.totally stripped down for powder coating and replating of all the fixings and fastenings
https://w4.bikepics.com/pics/2009/02/26/bikepics-1583790-800.jpg
it was just after i took this pic, that i found the swingarm pivot bolt was seized in !!,had to use a big hydralic press to get the bugger out !!

I've just done the suspension linkages today, and they were a complete disaster. All the bolts came out ok but the bearings were so seized i thought they were bushes. I managed to bodge up a plate so i could use the hydraulic pipe bender as a press. They came out in the end but were completely fudged.

Where did you get the bearings and seals from? there doesn't seem to be many spare parts around.

I dont have the log book back yet, but i thought it said kr1s on it. Thinking

Although it looks in good nick there is a lot of little problems that are hidden, like the rear suspension. I'm not looking forward to stripping the front forks tomorrow.

Could be a KR1S tank on a KR1? I was looking at a project one last year like that.

I think i'll post up todays findings while i'm in the mood. Didn't really do much, stripped and cleaned the rear master cylinder and the rear caliper. Then i did the rear shock and the linkages.

Next was the rear shock. I needed to find out why it was a bit crap. I found it had no pressure in it and no oil. Shocked

all but one of the bearings, and pretty much all off the seals seem to be specials.......
i searched the internet and took all the bearings and seals to my local bearing supplier and had no luck at all bar one bearing, here's some links for you........
the only bearing you can get thats not kawasaki only :
https://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/p8257/HK1816+Drawn+Cup+Type+Needle+Roller+Bearing+With+Two+Open+Ends+18x24x16mm/product_info.html?osCsid=18168f8aea241a1972dd561e202a9397

parts list :
https://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/teamsparrow/kr1spartslist.htm

where to order online......there doesn't seem to be anywhere in the uk to order.....you could try ringing cragley kawasaki, they may be more expensive,or cheaper than this lot......i got my bits from them and they arrived quickley, with one piece on back order though Crying or Very sad

I can make the inner part of the bearings on the lathe, but the roller bits i need to buy. I was thinking of replacing them with normal sealed bearings, i can't see the point of spending a lot of money on a roller bearing when 2 sealed bearings side by side would work just as good.

you could,but the sleeve's are heat treated hardened steel,and you won't find a sealed bearing that has a 18 mm i/d and a 24mm o/d,
looks like the minimum o\d for a sealed bearing with an 18mm i/d is 40mm,you'd have to machine one hell of alot out of the linkage to get it to fit...

I have a bearing that fits in one of the holes from a nsr water pump i think, but i'm sure i can find something to fit.

One of the bearings are perfect, like it has been fitted new, so i only need the small one and the large one.
