BBC report

Three-and-a-half month old Jaden Joseph Mack was fatally injured by a Jack Russell and Staffordshire bull terrier, who grabbed him from a table.

Terrible shame, but a warning to all dog/animal owners really. Never trust animals left (unsupervised)around babies, you just never know what may happen.

Why is it always the grandmother's with Staffies that end up with dead kids?

I find it strange that either breed were involved in this, as I always thought that terriers (esp. Staffs and I've never heard of a Jack Russell attack) were/are good family pets and are more inclined to defend within the family rather than attack.

Is it possible the fall from the table killed the child? And is it possible the Jack Russell just stood watching? Too many questions in this incident... that said it is an appalling tragedy.

Are you kidding? There has always been controversy with Staffs, too many are fucked in the head from a young age thanks to clueless owners. Despite how many people claim them to be so nice with people, I would never trust them. Bred for fighting in the first place.

Jack Russells are just evil anti social buggers at the best of times, its a working dog supposed to be driving out foxes and stuff. Often aggressive towards humans. Without stimulation they are bad news, much like border collies.

Unfortunate outcome for sure, and I guess a fall from a table is equally likely to kill a small child.

Not being funny here, but what sort of grandmother puts her grandchild on a table then falls asleep when she is supposed to be looking after it?

I feel sorry for the dogs! They both got put down.

How come we are so quick to put down animals that do this but not humans? Would be much better if human murderers were put down within hours of committing their crimes Thumbs Up

I have a Staff and a young baby.
I would never leave the 2 together unsupervised. Ever.

Sadly Staffs are one of those breeds that seem to get bad publicity whenever they do anything wrong. According to the stats found here, the English Springer and Cocker spaniels are the breed that are most responsible for biting humans (and the humans requiring hospital treatment as a result) - but, rarely do you see a 'sensational' tabloid report about spaniels.

As for Jack Russels, they are nasty viscous little sods. The only dog that has ever bitten me was a Jack Russel, in fact, it tried to bite me twice, but was discouraged the second time by a well placed toe-punt to the head.

As for the granny/table comments - babies of that age generally don't/can't roll around yet, and from what i understand the 'cushion' was like a large-ish bean bag type thing. Whilst i wouldn't do it myself, i can see how she considered the baby to be 'safe' up there, and i believe she had left him there on prior occasions with the knowledge and consent of his parents.

Which is why their aggression towards humans should be relatively low - traditional dog fights (for which the Staff was mostly bred) took place in a ring with a ref and the 2 owners of the fighting dogs. At anytime either the ref or the owners could be called upon to separate the dogs - a dog who bit the ref or the owner wouldn't generally be considered as 'game' for fighting.

As with most dogs (all IMHO) it is the owner which is to blame for dogs being violent or aggressive towards either other dogs or humans.

Agreed, a puppy bred for a pet is basically a blank canvas, it is only the owners who makes a mess of them.

Of course, some are slightly more disposed to violent/aggresive behaviour than others, but going back hundreds of years this is hardly the dogs fault. Any dog can moulded into a decent family pet with the right guidance.

However, I would hate to see any more draconian legislation put forward, particularly in terms of dogs, that might apply to ownership. Tests or any other nonsense for example. There is already enough crap regulations to deal with in life.

So these kind of incidents will have to be accepted. I remember being disappointed when I first learned that dogs involved in these kind of things were destroyed immediately without question, regardless of circumstances.

Thanks for the info guys, I don't keep dogs myself and although I know a few who do I acknowledge it's an area I'm a little vague on.

Though I appreciate the pack principle and understand they have to know who is 'Alpha'.

I'm learning all the time, in fact just last week I made some slight adjustments in the way I interact with the pooch. In order to try and establish the alpha principle even stronger.

We of course are lucky though, as a labrador puppy is about the best starting point you could hope for. Not quite a puppy anymore, and turning out a treat Thumbs Up

When i lived with my parents we had 2 jack russells,1 was very placid, the other was a right little git and hated me,they were both from the same family.I think some are just naturally agressive and some not, never had a dog since but miss the nice 1.

Everyone who owns Staffys claims they're not agressive to their family etc and are the softest dogs ever. Maybe they are nice to their owners, but when I see them in public or pass houses/gardens with them in they're always snarling and growling and generally acting pretty viciously, who's to say it would ever consider the baby as part of the family if it was at it's grandmother's.

Suprised by the dog bite statistics, I'd never imagine (through my experience) a Springer biting anyone unless they really asked for it, but that goes for any dog.

Balls. Expect more stupid legislation off the back a couple of dead babies - this one, and P.
Of course, the kids would have doubtless grown up to be cunts anyway, so no great loss for the world, but we must protect the children.

Right, I'm off out. Seeing as they've banned fox hunting, I'm off to hunt babies at a council estate with a couple of Staffs. Tally ho!

Babies? On a council estate? That's like hunting for guinea pigs in the guinea pig pen at the pet shop.

Yet again an accident makes the news predominantly due to the breed of dogs involved - really bugs me, but then you lot on BCF already would have guessed that!!

Dogs are always going to be unpredictable and potentially dangerous - they need careful handling by people with common sense. When we were tiny and my Mum needed to leave us for a couple of minutes she put us in one of those little playpens. Once we were bigger she used to sit inside it to get away from us Embarassed

My Rottie is now officially a PAT dog and I had to take him into a Care Home last week to visit some old folk. Started off fantastically well as an old fella shuffles past me with a zimmer announcing my dog shouldn't be permitted and should be shot Shocked - thought the old boy was being funny but thankfully didn't laugh just ignored it. Turned out he was deadly serious and terrified of dogs, but I'm still not sure why he felt the need to come down to the lounge to see the dog if he didn't like it. Well I got my own back and eventually had him patting the dog and he was completely made up and couldn't believe he'd been cuddling a scary Rottweiler Rolling Eyes

There are few things more frustrating than outspoken ignorant people and unfortunately the popular press are just that and perpetuated by more of the same.

Really, who gives a fuck?

I'd bet my mortgage (if I had one) against a cigarette that 100 times as many kids die on their mad relatives watch by stabbing forks in to plug sockets, downing bleach, crawling in to freezers etc.

Shall we ban plug sockets?

Fucking hate England. I really do. I can't even see how this is fucking newsworthy.

I know. I hate dogs nearly as much as I hate kids, so I'd want them to find some meat fast so I can leave them to it.

That's not funny. Thousands of plug sockets were put to sleep last year, unjustly. It's not the plug sockets' fault, they are generally docile components, but irresponsible people leave them alone with children just because their plug socket hasn't acted out before. And it's not just particular brands of plug socket! Though typically the media only pick up on Homebase plug sockets. I remember when my B&Q was just a little one-gang, when I bought him there was an instant spark, though he was unruly and needed training with a surge protector. But it is up to the owner, and I felt that without me helping him, he would have grown into a dangerous 5amp bastard.

cant really say a puppy is a blank canvas genetics play a part. staffies are naturally aggressive those who say they arnt are chatting shit. you can curb the aggression but it still an under lying factor of the breed. All terrier breeds are aggressive they were bred to be aggressive when fighting ratting etc etc

I never leave my baby alone with the dog in fact one of my dogs I am getting rid of as I am not taking the risk with her nervousness of the baby. The other is ok but I dont take the chance. I do know that one will not harm my baby as she is not raised that way and am a but sock of my mum going on at me to practucally get my dog put down.

And ditto to whoever said about putting animals down and not humans as quick. imagine the law changed that way!

I have never let my dogs alone with my children, when the kids were young and crawling the dogs went out so there was no chance of any issues. Even now the kids are 11 and 14 I make sure the dog knows he is at the bottom of the pecking order.

Dogs are animals and sticking a collar on it and giving it a name doesn't take away it's instincts and emotions. I love my dog but would never leave it alone with a baby (mainly because I know it has a nasty streak).

Yes I know how old this thread is. Never noticed it before. Laughing
