You may now all grovel before me Laughing

Took a while to get round to it I guess but next stage is theory and then DAS in June when I'm 21.

First time riding a 125 and I have to say I was terrified, it was Yamaha YBR and it lacked any kind of power and JUST about managed 60mph with the engine screaming and about to pop.

How do people ride these things and feel safe? Pulling out of junctions, onto roundabouts etc, it's just ridiculous. You have no road presence and don't have the power to get yourself out of sticky situations.

Either way, onwards and upwards!

Nice one. Thumbs Up

I have the same debate going at the moment. I don’t worry about pulling away at junction’s, but they soon catch up out of town.

I am happy to sit at 50-55 on A roads, it’s rather annoying everyone else feels they need to do 65-70. I imagin I’ll take my A2 within 2 years, but for now I’m going to develop a suborn attitude and wear a hi-viz vest.

I understand you feeling abit vulnerable on a small bike, but it's mainly in your mind. You will feel more confident when you start owning the road abit and scanning ahead more.
As for your concerns regarding power, well from 0-30 even my 26yr old XL125 would leave 80% of cars behind me.
A rolling start is a different matter on a small bike, thats where the clever planning will help, timing your overtakes or entrance onto a roundabout become a challenge that can be mastered.
Like most things it takes lots of practise, luckily for you, you can start now.

I agree. I find roundabouts and junctions the least intimidating part of riding a small bike. It’s been a long time since I had a gp100, and got good enough to hold high revs wile pulling away (reliably)

4 stokes may be less powerful but easier to master, or so I imagine after riding the CG on my CBT.

I have to re-learn a lot of that fine clutch control because I never used to have cars pull out faster than me. Not surprising when you think how light a 100-125cc is compared to getting a car moving.

The trick is keeping the power, so you keep relatively high revs from 1st upwards.

Pat, I'm not sure you've got the right idea, I've had a full license for three years in Dubai so I'm a fairly capable rider, I'm not a complete n00b Laughing It's just riding something that lacks any distinguishable power is scarier than riding flat out on a CBR600RR.

Or am I just mad? Laughing

My dad's got an ER5 over here an I've ridden that on 'private road' and that was OK and that's what I'll be tested on for my DAS. Still pretty bland compared to an out and out sports bike though.

I'm not sure what I was expecting from a dinky little 125 really, I had a semi automatic for a couple of weeks when I was in the Phillipines and I'm SURE that had more poke than this thing. Anyway point is, I respect the vast majority of 4T 125 riders, it's definitley not something I'd want to swing my leg over on a daily basis.

Now I just need to save up the money for a bike for summertime Very Happy

pulling away is about clutch control on a 125 commuter.
get that nailed and you'll probably get to 30 just as fast as you could on a 400.

dont blame your piss poor pulling away on the bike Wink

I have gone from awsome power from my old fzr to my sachs which isnt bad really, i didnt want to abuse the fzr through the winter in the area i live in. All muddy country lanes and horse shit riden main roads from huge tractors etc.
And that feels strange going back to the old days of moped kind of speeds.

But summer is on its way and so is my cbr 6 with any luck Cool

Craig, I can't understand the love you have for your little bike when you'ver got a 6RR in the garage as well Laughing

Seb, it's all muscle Shifty

Matt, I'm used to pulling away in a fairly calm manner, not red-lining the damn thing and letting the clutch out Neutral

Steve, you're an asshole Laughing Titz, hush you little asian, I'll come and see you in Summer when I've got a bike and show you I'm capable Wink

I think once you've respected the thing for what is - kinda like a push bike with an engine and you change your frame of mind and, occasionally the roads you ride on - it begins to make sense. It's nothing about speed or performance, it's all about just enjoying being on a bike and seeing where it'll take you. It chills me out more than anything else I know.

It gives me a feeling of satisfaction I don't get with other far more capable bikes. I enjoy riding bikes fast for sure, and when the mood takes me, riding to work at silly mph or going out at the weekend to set my hair on fire. But the RR's merely a precision tool that's astounding at what it can do - it doesn't give me much more to the whole experience. Old knackered little 400s aside, most sportsbikes I've ridden feel a little souless these days.

And a YBR has about 25% more power than my XR Wink

Craig I can see your point to some extent, I used to thoroughly enjoy bimbling along on my dad's little Kawasaki Estrella 250. It was brilliant fun and allows me to perceive biking in a whole different way.

I really did enjoy just going out on it for the hell of it in boardshorts, t-shirt and flip flops during the warmer months in Dubai but like you say, it's not as focused or as precise as a modern day sports bike because it's only a piddly little thing and that wasn't what it was designed for.

BUT it was still bloody good fun, but a 125, suicide in the form of two wheels and an engine if you ask me Wink

I feel the urge to get a t-shirt printed for you saying something along the lines of:

"I ride a 125. I'm hardcore"

Don't like 125s... you need to rag the hell out of it to get up the gentlest inclines (or you just flood the engine, like I did on my CBT ride!)

Nah, I think I just was in too high a gear and gave it too much of a twist... it just conked out and refused to start again.
