ZXR750 Idling issue

My ZXR750 has a (hopefully) small idling issue.

Sitting at around 200rpm it just about runs ok without stalling and you can rev it no bother.

If you turn the Idle screw so its sitting at about 1000rpm it's fine until you rev it, when you do it keeps on going by itself up to about 4000rpm and wont come back down.

If you unwind the idle screw more than you wound it it will eventually come back down.

Anyone got any ideas?

At a guess i would say something to do with the throttle linkages on the carbs sticking but it is a guess.

Does the throttle snap back ok - I am assuming that it does, then it would preclude the cables, which would hold it at constant revs, not increase.

Not sure if an airleak somewhere would cause this, or have the carb tops been off recently - it could, at an outside chance, be that the needle piston thing has got the hole blocked so is not closing back down properly - air leak may be best bet.

you say you are adjusting the tic-over with the screw


the carbs have a remote adjustment knob or im pretty sure they do

so to me this looks like you are adjusting these carbs with the balance screw adjuster on the linkages and this would cause the running you describe i might be wrong but would like to see a pic of the adjustment screw you are turning to clear this up hth

ZXr's run two throttle cables, one for opening and one for return(closing).

It is probably the return throttle linkage/cable has become stiff.
I took mine out recently because of this problem and I now experience similar issues to your self until I take one off my other machine.

Pics would help, and the revs shoot up when you return the throttle? Possibly a carb balancing issue? Maybe thats what your turning, a butterfly sync screw? We need pics tbh.

I had what seems to be exactly the same problem with mine about a month ago now.

I stripped the carbs and cleaned them followed by balancing and now it runs perfectly.

How much slack is in the throttle cables, try backing the tension right off to see if that settles it any

If it was me i'd do what youve been told and oil up the cables, re-set the throttle cable tensions, check the choke isnt sticking and lube that up, then balance your carbs and your bike will then benefit alot and throttle response will be fresh an smooth. If you have a mate who can do it get him/her to do it its well worth it.

What he actually means is that I'm going to get the carbs out and give them a good clean and the cables as well ... then I'll re-install and balance them for him
