Hi, whilst cleaning the bike today I came across a big ding in each wheel. Don't ask me how they got there, because I really do not know. I did wonder why my rear tyre pressure was going down fast, with no punctures.

So my question is... what would you do in this situation? Can the dings be hammered back with a block of wood and hammer? Can they be professionally repaired? Or, do I just have to scour ebay for a new set of wheels?

If I were to repair them by hammering them out will this cause any safety issues? Will the wheels be weak from there on in?

Here's some pics:

Cheers everyone.

theyre both an MOT failure.
i would personally just smack it with a hammer.

however... you're lying if you were riding the bike when that happened, and you didnt notice. would take quite a hefty smash to do that.

might want to consider new tyres too.

Guessed at the MOT bit, but not til july so no worries.

I'll be getting new tyres as the back one has hardly any tread left and I'm going to go for a fresh set as I'm going to change tyre brand and model.

I'd make a former then either press or hammer it back into shape. I don't think there's much stretch there so it should go back to shape quite well.

Excuse my ignorance but what's a former, and how would I go about making one?

Just a pattern from MDF or similar to go inside the rim to support it from the back when you try to straighten the rim.

You could always have somewhere like Maidstone Motoliner straighten them, if you don't fancy tackling the job yourself.

fair enough, so maybe just a block of wood the width of the inside of the rim to support it so that I don't bent the rim in too much.

I looked into maidstone motoliner but It'd probably be cheaper to get a second hand set of wheels instead.

Why? Can't see how that would affect the tyre?

As said they are aluminium wheels on the hornet, give it a wallop and it should go back reasonably ok.

I had a ding slightly less pronounced than that on my GSXR, no idea how I did it, but it passed the MOT, depends on the tester.

It may be worth looking at wheel prices on ebay too, rears tend to be quite cheap, as do the 16 inch fronts.

A good excuse to get new wheels and do 17 inch upgrade on the front for better tyre choice,i think the firestorm wheels were 17's and 3 spoke, Thumbs Up

think what shape the tyre would have to be in for the kerb to make that dent.
could have a tyre very prone to a blowout now because of splits or something.

I see what you mean, but as long as the carcass isn't still deformed I can't see how it would cause a problem now. Besides those dents may have been done on the previous set of tyres.

im not one to talk because i rode around with a wheel like that until MOT day (about a year), but the damage goes on inside, on places like the bead, that you cant see with the tyre on the rim. (or so im told by a tyre shop when they replaced my worn tyre)

The fact that the tyre is loosing pressure indicates that some sort of damadge has been done to the tyre.

Im hardle one to talk, i have a deep 4 inch slash across my back tyre at the moment, however i would suggest getting it changed if money allows just to be on the safe side.

hence why i said the tyre was worn. i went in to get it replaced because it was down to the fibres. this was before the MOT.

No damage to the tyre at all.

I've been speaking to my tutors in college today (doing bike mechanics) and they pointed out that not only do the rims have dings but there's also flat spots on the "floor" of the rim so to speak which means the tyres aren't seating properly in those areas meaning air leakage.

Basically, I think the dings could be repaired but I don't think the flat spots can be. New set of wheels I think Sad

There are specialist repairers for that kind of buckle in the wheels if you req it, try MCN Classifieds.
I had one on my VR800 and I just hammered it out with a Estwing Hammer and a block of wood.
It was really easy to put back into shape,"soft alloy"
Worked ok for me.
