What the hell? My jaw...

I went to bed Wednesday night, no pains, no symptoms of anything, nothing...

Woke up Thursday morning with a pain in my jaw, the pain is the joint from what i can tell, when i yawned it was painful. On further investigation certain movements were painful others weren't. Either way something's happened. So i thought i'd slept funny, went through my day, found it rather painful eating as my jaw is doing a side to side motion. I took pain killers which helped and hoped it disappeared.
Well its now been 4 days and today it's still there, i can talk normally and its not quite as bad as it was but this isn't right.
I thought maybe it had clicked somehow and not returned to normal so ive tried some movements to sort it, no joy. It isn't my teeth or gums, i can tell it is either muscular or joint in my jaw.

Im stuck here, i guess its now a job for the doc, but wondering if anyone else on here knows whats going on.

But do you chew gum? , in my youth I used to chew tons of gum and it ended up slackening the muscle on my jaw bone and eventually it dislocated after yawning in a terribly boring maths lesson in high school I could put it back myself by closing my mouth as normal but it hurt horribly and would leave a gritty irony taste in my mouth. I stopped chewing gum permanantly after that. It hurt for about a week and I was paranoid of opening my mouth too wide for ages.

I don't chew gum a lot really, but i do occasionally.
I was thinking maybe i was grinding my teeth while sleeping for some reason and hurt my jaw....i really dont know.

Its seems to be better but doesn't feel like its going to go away.
I guess there isn't a lot i can do if its my joint right?

Dunno if its the same as when your jaw gets unseated a bit by a good punch to the jaw. Joint feels weak and off centre.

Anyway, eventually and sometimes up to a week later, it would suddenly crack back in to place and pop your ears.

Might have knocked it out of place in your sleep?

Hey thanks Mark, this is useful information.

I realised that during this pain it is worse when i bite my nails, i seem to bite them in a certain way which uses the are of the jaw.
It could be a combination of things i guess, should i pay the doc a visit?

Yes go see the doctor, both my aunt and my cousin have had operations recently to sort out what mark posted, involved a massive cut from behind the right ear, over the skull to the left ear.

Doesn't leave a nice scar Sick

Its a little better since Thursday, ive avoided chewing gum or anything else that simulates that kind of movement. I dont want an operation Sad

I used to have this when I was a teen. I was given a plastic sheild for my teeth as apparently my jaw had not formed right and it would go away as I got older and it did. Just happened one day and then it was gone. Went and got an xray and all on it.

Probably not the same thing.

Where you Mcing night before or talking loads? eating something really chewey? like a cheap supermarket stake ? them things would give you lock jaw.

Yes i had a gig Wednesday night, i do use my jaw a lot. Cant remember now if i had gum, possibly as i wasn't drinking. Hmm Thinking

Killa, have you had alot of stress recently? Grinding your teeth in your sleep is quite common, caused by stress, and can mean you wake up with a sore jaw. Might be what either caused or exacerbated the problem?

I got a really bad jaw ache one time in France where it was really painful to do some things, especially eating. It turned out I had an ear infection (not that my ear hurt or owt). If nobody has suggested this yet, and I apologise if they have done, then perhaps it's worth looking into.

So i went to the Hospital last night, the nurse did say i may have twanged my jaw in my sleep by grinding my teeth. Confused

She said i could take some pain killers for the mean time, chill out and try not to over do it eating hard, or really chewy foods. If it persists go to the docs...she said her friend went in for an OP, but she did say it was consistant. Mine seems to be a one off.
I hope so anyway, thanks for all your help guys. Thumbs Up

I would advise ibuprofen. If it is a little swollen, reducing the swelling will help substantially.

Have you been getting headaches? Apparantly lots of people have mis-aligned jaws, and never notice, except they have lots of headaches.

How healthy are your teeth? I once had a small abcess in the corner of my mouth (well, right at the end of my row of teeth on the bottom). Although i got a little bit of pain from my tooth, most of the pain which was quite bad, was actually in my jaw joint. The dentist said that it is fairly common for the pain to me in the jaw rather than the tooth/gum, he did give a reason for it but i don't remember what it was, something to do with where the nerves go or something.

Yesterday was going to be the last day before i call the docs and go in.
I got some Nurofen and scoffed 8 over the course of the day, the disomfort is pretty much gone now. Today i haven't taken any thing.

Ill see how i get on.
Strange though, my girlfriend text me and said her jaw was hurting a bit. Someone mentioned Mumps?!
