PostPosted: 20:45 - 06 Mar 2009    Post subject: R1 front end onto R6 Reply with quote

Okay, Picking an R6 up next week. And looking at sticking an R1 front end on there.

Not interested in people telling me not to do it etc, Because I am. Simple.

Just after an idea of what might need to be adapted or modified to make them fit. If any?

Looking at early R1 forks, So they have the blue spot calipers, same as the R6. So I'm guessing the Disks will be okay.

Gonna have R1 Clip-ons and yokes/bearings/stem etc.

I'd like to keep the R6 front wheel though. Making up new spacers isnt a problem. Just wondering if the spindles will be the same diameter and length etc.

Has anybody here tried or looked into doing this before?

Opinions please.

cant you just buy the R1? they are about the same price anyway ad you must have been riding long enough to make insurance managable. Confused

the early R1s and R6s shared the same front wheel, so the R6 wheel will be fine, you don't even need new spacers Wink

I am not sure the yokes are a direct swap, apart from that, I can't envisage any problems Thumbs Up

Nice to know the wheel will go straight in.
Means I can keep the galfer disks.

My only other concern is the Yokes/stem. I guess its all down to the length of the headstock tube?

Keir_K3, I'd loose my license or my life on an R1. I was a big enough wanker on the NC29.
An R1 will lift onto the back wheel at 100mph.
I'd end up killing myself.

Also tax and insurance will be more expensive on the R1.

for my own benefit and curioisty, what benefit does the R1 front end bring over the R6?

Im guessing theyre both standard forks as apposed to USD's?

Excuse my ignorance.

R1 forks are USD. Handling benefits, I doubt there are any. They probably share the same internals, Like the NC30 and NC35s.

But the Gold USD's just look infinitely better than the Silver painted fork legs on the RWU R6 forks.

Don't know why R6's do not come with USD as stock. Surely not budget constraints?

The apparent benefits are less unsprung weight and improved handling.

I suppose the unsprung weight is abit of a factor.

Although I am a fairly confident rider, I dont think I am extreme enough to benefit the difference in the spec of the forks.

I just think some USDs will make the bike look a bit more modern, And even more tarty.

The later R6's do come with USDs. Not sure why the older ones didnt.

Yeh, fairly strange since my ageing 91/92 zxr has USD forks.

From what I have seen (a friend has an older R6) and heard the R6's are flickable and agile enough for 99% of people to not worry about the apparent benefits let alone need them.

They do look good though. Thumbs Up

Kwak's have always had USDs for some reason. The ZXR400s all had USDs im sure.

So did the GSXR400 actually.

It was just the Yamaha and the Honda that didnt.

Congratulations on putting 2 and 2 together and getting 4. Karma

I read that Binge was getting an R6.
I read that Luke was selling his R6.

I hadn't the faintest idea binge was buying lukes VFR.

2+2 = 3 Doh!

EDIT: Just to be clear, I'm not taking the piss, just pointing out that I had a brain fart. Embarassed

Watching with interest, something I'd like to do with mine.
What I've found so far is.
You can use r6 wheel disc calliper.
You need, usd forks (obviously) bars top and bottom yoke.
The yokes need the r6 stem pressed into them.

Nah, I like the look of the R6. I dont want it to look like ive tried to make it look like an R1. I just wanted USD forks because im a tart. Laughing

I was confident the brakes and wheel would fit, Just wasnt sure about the stem.

Can the stem bolt actually be pressed into the R1 yoke? I know I tried that with my Pit bike forks and the holes in the yokes were different sized so the stem just rattled around in the bottom yoke.

Well it would be a VERY good idea to find out first.

1. If Luke hasn't been paid out and sells it it will could well influence his claim in the negative.

2. If the insurance company want salvage which is likely with a popular bike Luke may have to take a REALLY serious dive on the price if he hasn't yet been paid out for it.

3. If he has been paid out there is an insurance marker on the bike, find out what it is.

This isn't a jab at anyone. Both of you could easily lose a lot of money if the bike part of Luke's claim hasn't been paid out yet. I have seen it happen before a fair few times.
