Did I get a bad batch of brake pads? , in that last year I bought a batch from an ebay seller (who I completely forget who it was as I buy lots of bike bits) , one set were generally ok (other than the need to grab the brake harder) and lasted 2100 miles which I thought was terribly poor as the EBC ones I bought lasted through half a year's riding Spain and then some,

The other set from the same retailer I bought lasted from Thursday less than a week ago till today when I was just about to take the bike to an MOT and noticed the pads were virtually non existant.... I'm pretty sure the brakes aren't seized either and surely seizure won't cause total annilation of the pads right? (done about 300 miles since last Thursday), as I have to roll the bike backwards out of a gate.

Did I get some knock off pads or something? , I don't remember feeling or seeing a chunk of brake pad fall away but I do recall last week wondering why my brake fluid had gone down from the top line to min level on the master cylinder?. In that the CBR has 4 pads and surely they all couldn't have fallen off or could they ? as there was just the metal backing on all of them.

Is there a moral of the story never to buy off ebay other than from trusted sources (like wemoto ebay and LM spares ebay?).

I'd name and shame but I forget who it was I bought them off , and they were not really that cheap either.

Any thoughts?.

Ta

I have heard/read some dodgy reports of EBC pads just falling apart and failing Thumbs Down

Stock honda ones (I guess this is for your cbr) have always been good for me.

Edit:

Found the page I was thinking of, clicky

I've had ebc pads come away from the backing plate. It was a long time ago though. I've had ebc pads since then and they've been fine. I guess it just happens from time to time. I've always checked my brakes pretty regularly since then as i've had an alloy banjo fitting break off on me as well.....

What make were the pads? Not goldline or something similar?

I foolishly bought a set of goldline pads from ebay. With my wavey discs i got 350 miles out of them, and their performance was utter shite, especially in the wet. Ive used Nissin pads since, they have been fantastic.

They sound like they were really cheap nasty unbranded kind of pads, well you get what I mean. I reckon for important things like braking components you should always stick to something from a reputable manufacturer.

Hi

Sounds like some very dodgy pads.

Some bikes do eat pads (my RS125 does, Charlottes 900 Thunderbird does as well), but 2k is bad and 300 miles is attrocious.

If the pad came off the backing plat you would have had no brakes for a while and would certainly have noticed it (you would have had to pump the lever quite a few times to take up the space vacated by the pad material). Furthermore, as you say it would be unlikely to happen to all 4 pads at once.

Strangely, one set of cheap pads I got in a hurry (all that was available at short notice) were some stock Armstrong ones. These lasted very well and were as good as normal EBC pads (they had double the life of the EBC ones before I threw them away, and I did that because their wet weather performance degraded at this point).

All the best

Keith

It is worth going with a brand that you have heard of, or had recommended, for brake pads. Less so for car brake pads I find.

If you're not an EBC fan, ferodo platinums are a good non-sintered disc. The VX800 boys use them, they do a decent job of hauling up 250kg+rider with a single front disc, and being non sintered they work from cold.

Hi

Hear reports of all sorts of brands of pads failing with the backing material coming away. Carbon Lorraine (sp) had a dodgy reputation for it a few years ago, but plenty of people swear by them.

All the best

It's just not worth trying to skimp on brakes, or tyres for that matter. Tyres are the only thing keeping you on the road and brakes are the only things that can stop you (in a controllable manner of course).

No they were in a sort of cardboard backed covered with cling film (not blister pack) SBS brake pads, I think tbh they were knock offs or something using cheese or something as the friction material as they were not all that cheap (about £1 off the EBCs) but they could get them to me quickly and thus I bought them.

SBS are regarded as a fairly decent brand. They have been used in motorcycle racing for years. I sell them pretty much everyday for cars and have never had any problems with them at all, although I've never used them myself.

My GS ate a set of pads in 1000 miles turn out the wind was blowing my muff into the brake lever.

rear pads I just get any old thing but the fronts I have tried a couple of different brands and got 1k-1500 out of them, back to stock honda and I get 4k+.
Cost twice as much but get 3 times the wear so works out cheaper in the end.
