Stitching/Sewing leathers

The midline zip for my 2-piece leathers (which cost £63 from fleabay nearly new) has come unstitched from one end. Only by about 2 inches, and theres no tearing. Its just literally come unstitched.

Anyhew, took it to Bike Stop for a quote and they said maximum £20... Now they (the company they use) have come back to me with £80. Which I'm obviously not paying for a small problem in a cheap set of leathers.

So, what would you guys suggest using to 'sew' it. I say 'sew' as I can pretty much reuse the old holes, but I'm wondering what thread more then anything. I've seen mates sewing patches in to leather using a needle and pliers, so I know the theory...

Kevlar thread costs £4 for a bobbin of the stuff , you need a big needle for it though just follow the holes through but use a double line stitch where each hole gets done twice.

There's a little leather patch at the botom of the zip on my leathers, and the stiching came undone on that. My mum just used some black silk thread and restitched it using th existing holes. She did a good job of it too, you'd never know they'd been repaired.

You can buy sewing needles especially for leather and just get some good quality thread.

You are being ripped off on a massive scale.

The problem you may have is that you live down south and prices can be considerably more expensive than the north.

My colleague this week had his 1 piece leathers sown locally (zip on the crotch), this cost £6 from an out of town alteration place.

I myself had 2 new zips and a knee slider sown on from another place where, they charged me £20.

You might have better weather down south, but the cost of living is much cheaper up here.

That reminds me, I stil need to get a new belt loop stitched onto my leathers as the plastic one snapped and they're now held together with big paperclips...

bikestop quoted me <20, it was this place they sent it off to that decided to take the piss.

its because bikestop caters to people with more money then sense.

i do like the idea of kevlar thread though. so is it fairly simple then, no special stuff needed?
