And it's only going to get worse, especially north of the border where we'll be taxed per unit.

Beer tax increases cost 20000 jobs so far - 4 Mar 2009
A record 2000 British pubs have closed with the loss of 20000 jobs since the chancellor, Alistair Darling, increased beer tax in the 2008 budget, ...

Suppose they will bring more in from the beer tax than the 20000 paying tax on wages and 2000 pubs- fuck the people you stand on its all about the paper apparently.

The only pubs that have closed cause of the smoking ban are the ones that didn't move with the times.

A lot of pubs completely refurbished their premises. Making a pleasant environment. Some pubs in the area have come out of the wilderness and made great areas to drink.

Some on the other hand, bought a couple of sofas, but didn't bother washing down the walls, leaving stale smoke everywhere. They have seen less throughput than others.

I don't account for everybody in the UK, but I go to the pub more now than before the smoking ban, even if it is for a couple. There never seemed to be any point in going to the pub for a couple just to stink of smoke afterwards.

To be honest, smokers shouldn't feel too hard done by, some of the smoking facilities put on by some pubs are nothing short of spectacular. In the summer, they've got it made, comfy seats, beer in hand and the evening sun basking down on themselves.

I haven't seen a single pub close, in the same way as I don't know a single smoker who's stopped going to the pub.

Who's going to go to the pub on a rainy winters night, pay more for their beer and sit outside in a shelter which is only allowed three sides when they can sit at home and smoke? It has to be a factor, there must be people who've stopped going because of the ban.

Quite a few, judging by the pubs I've been to since the ban Wink

I'm sure there are, I'm just saying I don't know any. Conversely, I wonder how many people have started going to the pub because the won't stink of cigarette smoke afterwards. There are two ends to the stick.

You probably guessed i'm not a big fan of the ban, i do think it was ill conceived. There should have been properly dedicated smoking and non smoking rooms. I also don't like the way it's enforced by people snitching, for the want of a better word. Probably the only people who know are the publicans themselves.
I can't see the government helping out the pubs because that's where people sit and slag them off Wink

Many people in the trade believe it is the fault of the pubs themselves - if they had taken it on themselves to make a change (toward non-smoking pubs with proper, separate smoking areas) then there would not have needed to be any legislation.
Instead, they did nothing, and left it to the government to tell them what to do.

I thought wetherspoons tried non smoking pubs and it was a disaster.
I don't think the problem was as big as the government made it out to be,people had been smoking in pubs for centuries then all of a sudden it's banned. Then pubs started closing all over the place, coincidence?
It reminds me of auf wiedersehen pet last week when they all voted for a colour to paint the hut, first colour choice and second colour choice.Nobody voted for yellow as a first choice but it won anyway, when they complained Barry told them "that's democracy."

Anyway i seem to have hijacked this thread, i apologise. If the government decreased the tax more pubs would stay open, more beer would be sold and more money would go in the coffers,or am i being to simplistic?

The title of the thread is "beer tax" yet you think the closure of pubs co-incides with the banning of smoking.

Have you seen how much 8 cans of lager are in the supermarket?

THAT'S why pubs are closing.

Beer has always been expensive, but still people went into pubs.
I never said THAT's why pubs are closing, but i did open up the topic to debate. OK i'll lay my cards on the table, here's what i think .......... Beertax is too high, that is a problem for landlords.Smokers do not want to sit outside freezing, they want to be in the warm nursing their pint, that is another problem for landlords. I'm sure that landlords sell more beer during the summer when the weather is fine and people don't mind sitting outside. The closure of pubs does coincide with the smoking ban, loads of pubs were closing before 2008 budget.
