So how are they saved?
With all that bhp and torque on our Great British roads i'd expect to hear of more tails about highsides(maybe on other forums)
Anyways i'm waffling...How would i go about saving a highside situation?

Hi

Yep, a high side is basically caused by badly catching a low side. No real chance of catching a high side.

All the best

Keith

I normally give it more gas and spin the bike round 360 degrees like in the movies, Thumbs Up

This is of course a complete lie as you can't save it.

Those are near highsides. You can save a near highside, you can't save an actual highside (if you do save it it really wasn't a highside).

You save a near highside by NOT snapping the throttle off - you either stay on it, keeping the slide going and try to effect an elegant lowside out of it, or you back off gently enough that you regain grip but not so quickly that it regains it too quickly and highsides you. It's the sudden ungrip-grip that'll have you landing on your face and unfortunately your brain's instinct would generally say 'something's wrong, cut the power'.

Hi

Both cases of catching low side badly enough to almost trigger a high side, but not quite badly enough.

All the best

Keith

The best thing to do in a slide is nothing. Let the bike sort itself out cos chances are unless you're a genius anything you do is gonna make it worse. Smile

Hi

Bendy covered it. Basically back off VERY slightly. If you shut the throttle the spinning rear wheel will suddenly grip again, but the bike still has it sideways momentum to pivot the bike sideways about the tyres contact patch.

All the best

Keith

I've kinda answered my own question in a way.
I've got a low powered bike so horsepower induced slides don't easily happen, but when i've lost grip on poor surfaces whilst on the throttle i've had better experiences when i've ridden it out.

Thanks

Pat

I have had a 125 go sideway while trying to go in almost a straight line at low speed. I did save it (and do remember thinking repeatedly "back off the throttle but only gently").

All the best

If you did you'd have been half an hour late, just like Jamie.

That shows you just how far from the limit most people are.

A lot of highsides I've seen have been caused by people being hamfisted with the throttle.
