simple really......... anyone use them?

i fancy a pair as my current boots are wearing through at the heel,( pratting about pretending to be a "proper" supermoto rider). I tried a pair but found i couldn't get my foot easily round the gear leaver.

cheers Thumbs Up

MX boots take awhile to wear in. When i first bought mine (Alpinestar Tech 3's), i found it incredibly hard to change gear. After a space of 2-3 weeks they starting wear in and shifting became alot easier.

You may want to change the position of your gear lever also, i did this for the first week or two. Definitely worth it though imo, protects me shins which i need for drumming. Razz

I wear Tech 4s on my CB500s (and on my CG125 before that!). Took a few miles to get used to, but comfy as hell - and the soles don't leave your feet crying if you actually need to walk anywhere as well...

Mind you, you don't half get some odd looks as a lass in MX boots Wink

Tried it on the TRX, seemed much more hassle than it's worth. You get a better range of movement of your leg on an off-roader.

They are a fair bit fatter in the toe area, meaning that your foot has to be moved quite a lot more to use the gear lever.

Should be a bit better on a more upright/taller bike, however road boots are designed the way they are for a reason Wink.

Yes mate, two friends of mine use them, one rides a BMW R1200GS Adv and wears Sidi Raptors, which I think have been replaced by the Crossfire, and the other rides a Yamaha XT660 Z/R and wears Hein Gericke TRG Cross boots.

Erm, while I'd classify both of those as 'road' bikes, they are both fairly tall off-road styled (at least) bikes Smile.

Ah, that being the case they shouldn't be nearly as much hassle. I do find that gear changing still takes a bit of getting used to, but haven't noticed any problems recently (riding off-road), so guess I've adapted to it.
It is still definitely going to require more moment than 'normal' boots due to the fatter toe area, however on a big bike like that you should at least have some space to move.

I'm not sure I'd choose them for non-off road riding really myself. Generally more hassle to walk about in, though that you do get used to, too.

Loved my Tech3s and now wear Oxstar TRX. But I do ride Africa Twins and Varaderos.

Just move the gear lever and rear brake lever to suit the new boots.

Move it up so you can get your boot underneath and it often ends up meaning you have to take your whole foot off the peg to drop down a gear.
Thinking about it, it may be that I'm sitting further forward, which I've been making an effort to do when off-roading, which has meant the gear lever is easier to use with proper dirt boots on.

I wear O'Neal M10's on both the CB500 and DT125. Look a bit like a courier heading into work on the CB every day but sometimes that helps Smile

Had to adjust gear selectors on both bikes but they're a well comfy boot to wear. Thumbs Up

i had the same thought and after 2 weeks with a pair of oxtar dunes i was totally fed up with trying to wedge my foot under the gear selector and changing up and down with my whole leg
the leather broke in great but the whole inside leg of the boot was plastic which didnt seem to have any give

Trials boots might be a better bet, actually - as they apparently have a bit more flexibility.
Decent motocross/enduro boots are designed to be very stiff for best protection to the lower leg (probably just means you break your leg further up Smile ).

So what would you recommend for my big trip? , I don't particularly fancy the Nath method of random 'boots'

I've actually done off-roading in old pairs of magnums (with decent sized holes in) enough times and not had problems.
I'm quite liking my goretex 'GI' boots at the moment for commuting

I think were it me, I'd go for a decent dirt-boot. Haven't used trials boots myself (just been drooling over the idea of trials bikes, so reading up on stuff generally) but it sounds like they'd be worth considering.
However this is me that expects to crash at some point - though oddly I do actually seem to have got (said touching some wood) a good idea of levels of grip etc, so actually tend to fall off less than other people going at the same speed as me!

Of course, the obvious thing for the OP, just thinking about it, is probably the boots sold as 'courier' boots, that I suspect also have a bit more movement.

I bought a set of Tech 3s intended to use with the Versys.

I got them home and sat on the bike and couldnt get the hang of using the gear lever with them, and found the feel for the rear brake wasnt evident.

I'd rather have more feel when using the brake and having the comfort of being able to change gear with my foot on the pegs.

I do like the look of them, but its more form than function for me.

Reading elsewhere on the trials boots thing - apparently trials boots are waterproof too, where motocross/enduro boots don't tend to be.

What size are the tech 3s, if you want to get rid? I need to get some new boots at some point because the straps have broken on mine and they no longer do them Sad.

I agree entirely and although both guys do go off-road, they don't do it on either of those bikes. Smile

i have a pair of a* tech 8's and a pair of hebo's (and a set of arlen ness 1064's).

they say trials moots offer more flexibilty erm yer maybe but only very slighlty. but do have a lot more of sole which is easier when walking about on muddy bankings etc.

trials boots are more waterproof than MX ones but they must be kept VERY well waxed to keep most of the water out.

best thing is mine have metal toes which seem to bring to light people in their cars when they recieve a boot for cutting me up etc.

oh and i have a Yamaha R6 and a Suz DR-Z 400E now but previously had gas gas' Ty's and a beast of a sherco 290 etc and i use the hebo's on both the 6 and the DR

and i use my hebo's more than either the A*s or Arlen's as the tech 8's aren't as comfy and the 1064's are my summer boots

If anyone is interested I have a pair of O'Neal Hardwear boots, mens size 6, in white up for grabs. Never been worn, bought them cos I was planning to get crosser and do some off roading but it hasn't happened.
If you're interested make me an offer. (postage extra, collection possible)
