This may seem daft, but I'm wondering how to get the pads out from the caliper without having to bend or break the retainig clip nor cutting the pad in two.

Is there a method? Please offer illustrations.

You have to remove the retaining clip.

I assume you have to squash one end and then pull it out.

Can't you pop the retaining clip out with the pads in it?

Dude those things are filthy Shocked Not sure I'd be putting those any where near my bike.

They in dire need of a serious clean up ....is that what salted roads do to your calipers Confused
