intermitant electrical fault on sv650

hi

got an electrical fault on the 01 sv650s of mine. Can be working fine then suddenly its dies like someone has hit the kill switch button or some thing, go to start it up again and all the power from the battery has gone and it wont even turn over with out having to get jumppers on it.

I have stripped down my starter motor and checked its ok so i've cleaned it up and now need to stick it back on bike. aswell my haynes manual says i should check the charging system by disconnecting the neg - lead from battery and use a multi meter in series with the neg - lead to battery to check for voltage readings, is this right?

and aswell has anyone every come across a problem like this on there bike or car even as at the moment im on with just stripping the whole thing down bit by bit checking them out to see if there ok.
