Hi!

My Suzuki 2003 GS500e seems to have a dip in power, about 7-8k. The dip doesn't show if the bike pulls through 7-8k, but does if you sit about 7k, and then open the throttle. There is a bit of a lurch before the bike starts pulling. It's really horrible when it does this, especially for over takes.

Can anyone give me an idea what it might be and what to check?

Thanks in advance!

Could be almost anything from a tight chain to a clogged air filter. I'd suggest giving it a service and making sure that all of the carb rubbers etc are all in good condition etc.

Does it have an aftermarket exhaust? or maybe a hole in the exhaust?

Or maybe all GS5's do that sir?

It had a service recently, valve clearances are fine, chain's fine, air filter's new.

I'll have a look at the carbs (first carbed bike I've owned. Confused ) Will it be obvious if something's wrong with them? Easy enough to take apart?

It won't be obvious and it won't be easy. I agree with Robby on this that if they work then don't mess with them.

Not sure what kind of carbs are on the GS5...

Try running half a can of carb cleaner through it with the engine running and giving it some throttle to keep it from stalling. This might loosen up some bits in the carbs that are sticking.

Does it only do it at 7-8k rpm? Might be some slackness in your throttle cable which is only noticable when you open up.

Did you service the bike yourself or was it done at a garage?

Have you ever known redex to ACTUALLY have an effect on performance?

Yeah, good plan. If the exhaust has a hole it might cause something to go awry.

my gs500 didnt realy have a silencer, it made it have need a lot of throttle to go anyway but there were no flat spots ever, just pulled and pulled and pulled.
now. id start with a service. 75% of ''carberation'' problems are ignition related anyway. change plugs.
check that the ht leads are well pushed into there plug caps and coils. if you take your tank of the ignition coils are inside the top of the frame just below the headstock.
there should be two coils, one for each cylinder. check for obvious damage and corrosion, but to be honest these are very well built machines, despite being built to a budget.
once youve got you new pulgs, and everything is firing nicely take it for a spin. if it isnt that then its carb related or maybe a bit of feul starvation.
check your feul tabnk breather.
give your carbs a good clean an blow out with and air line, and make sure the pilot jets are screwed it well bit do not over tighten. mite be worth taking the gauze out of you tank and give that a clean and swill you tank out while your at it.
If there is and in-line filter going from your feul tap to your carbs it mite be worth replacing that, to be honest i would do that first, because they can cause you sooooo much agro if there blocked and you dont think of checking them.
good luck and let me know how you get on Smile
cheers,
josh.

12 hours shifts for the past 7 days. Got a day off tomorrow so I'll be checking the plugs and fuel filters tomorrow.
