So how would I do it? The bike is a 99 ducati monster, and the insurance is RAC or AA.

It's 80 miles away, so how would I go about this. I have the best breakdown policies thing, the most expensive one with home start, recovery etc.

I was thinking maybe take off the seat, and unplug a couple of block connectors, maybe HT lead, or power to the ignition.

Any ideas?

''you were riding to the MOT and it broke down''.
simple

tell them you're a mechanic and the piston rings have gone, so they wont send a ''fixing'' guy out, and theyll send a recovery guy instead.

Another one you could try (if the bike has an oil pressure light) is to disconnect the sender discreetly. If you tell them the oil light came on whilst riding it, they probably won't even try to start it up for fear of further damaging the engine.

If the bike is able to be ridden I'd be tempted to book a test near your home and ride it to that. As long as you go straight to the test you'll be legal and you're allowed to ride it home following a failure too (unless it's been declared as 'dangerous to drive'). You never know, it might even pass!

Only time I've had a breakdown vehicle turn up with the aim of getting me started was when I specifically told them my battery was dead. The last time was an immobiliser death on the SP1 which could have been sorted with a half decent toolkit and 20 minutes, but they turned up with a flat bed anyway.

When the big end went on my CCM they still sent a normal patrol person out, despite me asking to at least talk to the patrol person to not waste his time if he agreed with me.
This was with the RAC.
Oddly enough, when I turned it over and it made horrible clunking noises, he agreed that I needed recovery home Rolling Eyes.

You may not be able to.

The RAC left a mate of mine stranded in Wales a couple of weeks ago when the reg-rec on her EFE fried. They refused to take her because the bike was not displaying a tax disc, even though they had done a check to confirm that it was taxed............ Evil or Very Mad

Sounds like you need a friend with a van/pick up.

This isn't a problem, I specified this with them the last time I rang up about my car, Clutch cable went in the middle of nowhere, and the battery was too rubbish to run the risk of stalling at junctions and using the starter to get it going again. I had no tax then.

I've got RAC + AA, so if one tells me to do one, I'll call the other.

I'm thinking oil light, but the bike has an alarm also, maybe just disconnect some ignition things but leave the alarm on.

In that case, do what MattSpratt has suggested...and insist on recovery only...
