Small capacity 2 stroke supermoto

Now I have a garage and space for another bike I was thinking about getting or building a supermoto for pissing about on

I quite fancy something 2 stroke and small, maybe a 250? Was even considering a 125 but I imagine you pay a premium and they're all shagged by learners. I don't really have a clue what's out there to be honest, I don't want something too highly strung so a road oriented motocrosser like the KMX, DT, TS and MTX 125s that I lusted after 10 years ago would fit the bill, but perhaps 250 versions?

Anyone recommend a good starting point? Don't want to spend more than a grand really.

Yamaha TDR 250 - I'm after one myself when I've got the cash/different job as I wouldn't want to have to ride one all day, everyday....


Maybe stick some SM wheels on a Honda CRM 250? Hella lot of fun, and should be achievable budget wise with a little bit of ebay hunting

I'd forgotten about the TDR250, loved the TDR125. I take it the engine is the same as the tzr250? 45bhp or so?

Like the idea of an RGV or one of the other 250 2 stroke sports bikes but I want a shitter I can wreck doing wheelies and stuff I've already got a sports bike anyway!

While they are fairly highly strung, I'd still recommend a proper enduro bike. The 2 strokes are actually still quite reliable.
Go for a 200 if you want a revvy '2 stroke' nature with a decent kick. Go for the 250 or 300 if you want oodles of power.
Depending on age, etc, you're looking at either side of 100kg 'real' no-fuel weight. Supermoto wheels fit straight in for the KTMs and I believe Gas Gas'.
Prices are very reasonable for what you get, too - ie decent engine, but also decent suspension, brakes etc and good parts availability, but prices tend to be lower than road bikes of the same year.

....errr, right. Sorry you seem to have misunderstood, it was just a figure of speech. I have no intention of buying something and riding it until it blows up without bothering to look after it. What I mean is I want something cheap to hoon aound on that doesn't owe me a fortune if I crash it.

I seen a DT 125 in (aftermarket) SM trim the other day and he was flying, got the back end right out going into a left hander, the boy sure knew what he was doing. Well worth a look into I'm sure.

Mugenseki is doing a DTR125 SM project, i'm doing a KMX200 SM, and there are plenty of small capacity 2stroke Trailes that you could get cheap and throw some supermoto style wheels on for scabbing about on.

G is right if you actually want a decently capable bike, with serious ability and the option to run normally used SM sized sticky tyres. The downside to a pure road bike with the likes of KTM's Husky's and the like is that they nearly all use pre-mix instead of autolube. This could make it a bit of a pain in the ass! Talking of which look how small and thin the seats are on a KTM compared to a DTR or KMX for example. They would not be comfortable for more than an hour or 2 at best!

There is someone selling a TS125X in the workshop section. Make him an offer for it maybe? You could get some 17" rims laced up to the original hubs. You might not be able to run wide tyres due to clearance issues, but narrow 17" tyres like those on an NSR125 etc would be more than enough for a 20bhp 125.

There are few 250cc 2 stroke trail bikes that are around these days. The TS250X, DT250MX or PE250/IT250 are just a few examples of very rare bikes that are hard to find, but would all be nice for a bit of a project.

The DT250MX was a de-tuned MX250 engine, but it had at least 21bhp. The 400 was even more de-tuned but could wind out to nearly 100mph! The TS250X is about the same 31bhp as the KMX so it aint to bad peformance wise. a 15sec standing 1/4m is better than a sportsbike 125!

I'm not too sure about the 125 idea as it may be a bit too slow. Have to ride one really and see. This thread has given me a few ideas though so thanks for that
