Hi All,

Just a heads up. If anyone is thinking of doing there IAM advanced then get in quick and buy the gift tokens on the IAM website which are valid for a year at £109. before April.

And I forgot to say I am finding it hard to find a dayglo cardy LOL

On a more serious note I have been planning to getting around to doing the IAM course for a while so may do it this summer.

Ask your local group if they'll give you training without having to join the AIM. The AIM sticker really isn't worth the £130.

I can't see them doing that, they are only cheating their 'own' Institute. Besides you still have to pay a fee to do the test and if you are going to do the training you might as well get the piece of paper at the end of it.

Why do the test? Why get the paper? I've done the test, got the paper and let my membership expire. Doesn't make me any less of a rider. Was of money the test was, but he training I'd say is worth while.

An even better scheme is the ROSPA advanced where if you pass you get a bronze, silver or Gold grade. You then have to retest every 3 years (free retest) to keep your grade. I think this is better as it encourages you to keep your own standards up.

Problem is there are many less ROSPA groups so the local IAM group do rideouts every week.

Well I would say because it is another string to your bow, as the IAM certificate is valid for life. Even if it only knocks you a few quid off your insurance per year it is worth something.

Yeah but if it cost £140 for the certificate, that's many years before you even begin to see a return, many insurers like to know about it, but give no discount.

IAM is full of riders trying to make riding a bike into some form of two wheeled health and safety.

Very very boring.


If you want a good day out training go out with a copper for the day. Many forces run courses with cops on there days off with there own bikes and its great.
Riding (speedwise) is as you would ride normally and its a great day although very tiring as it really is a full day.

I will let you know once I have done it and give an honest opinion.

With regards the BikeSafe course with the cops I did one in Selly Oak in 2007 and fully agree with you its a really good day out and learn't loads.

Conversely the policeman I had on bike safe couldn't keep up with the SV I was on for bikesafe on a tight twisty section (and I had the 'fast' policeperson) despite me not using brakes. The policeman did some manoeuvres I considered to be dangerous and others just rude. He broke his own 'set in stone' rules.
For £25 the day wasn't to far off the free day at the local IAM, though you did get a meal at the Ace Cafe included, to help wash down the propaganda!
