Went on the Google Maps site this morning and found that now we have Street View active for lots of cities in the UK!

Here's the back of my bike with top box when it used to be at my parent's house:

Clicky

Can you find yours, especially if you happened to pass/follow one of their cars? Mr. Green

Preston/Lancaster/Blackpool aren't covered, so there's no chance of me getting my house on out in the sticks!

Found my place, no bike and no car, so i must've been at work (which isn't covered Sad ) when they came round, but the worst is they came round on Recycle day, so everyone's rubbish is sitting in the street.

Looks even more of a dump than it usually does.

Thing is, it's still not really a good analogy. In 1984, the surveillance was generally directed at the middle classes, particularly those in positions of power...the 'lower' classes, iirc, were mainly just left to get on with it. (Going to have to read it again, I think)

Also, the people doing the watching were the government, and in secret, not a private company that happily gives access to all and sundry.

Whenever the subject of CCTV comes up (or Google street View), and Big Brother is mentioned in relation to it, I always feel that the point of 1984 is being missed somewhat.

To be honest I just can't think of another classic which so neatly capsulates surveillance culture until we get into the eighties and ninties Cyberpunk works. Very Happy

Time I dusted off 1984 and Animal Farm.

They can do that anyway, using the ancient and dark art of perambulating while looking around.

I'm loving the paranoia on the BBC News Have Your Say.

This worries me. This is a great way for terrorists to check out the target without actually going to the place.

Terrorists who are stalking a potential target will stand out like a saw thumb with their different clothes and their cameras and their different languages.

If my house is being cased by terrorsis I can see them from my CCTV cameras I hve around my property or when they trigger the alarms by walking on the trip wire.

yes another infringement of my personal liberties me thinks

I guess by "lower" classes you mean the proles? They weren't deemed intelligent enough to be a threat.
