Hi

After 4 months without a car and being too skint to get one , I've been offered a cheap ride ...

Its a 1994 M reg Polo coupe , one of the last MK3s. Its got tax and MOT til the end of June , and is pretty clean , no rust to be seen.

The asking price is £100.

The only problem is , the engine is totally fubared , the dozy bint who owned it previously run it with no oil Rolling Eyes

and was surprised when it went bang ...

Im quite capable of doing an engine change so thats not an issue , im just wondereing , will it be woth it , once I've paid for a new lump from a breakers ??

Does anyone have an idea what an engine would cost me from a scrappy ??

What is the rest of it like..
Thinking in terms of only 3 months before its spend time.

As to a engine, call the local scrappies as prices will vary.

If she was too stupid to check the oil, what else has been neglected? How many miles on the car, it's not just the engine that wears out.

Looking on Ebay at completed listings for similar motors - the price ranges from 200 - 600 for runners with decent MOT's left. I really wouldn't bother personally.

The rest of it is mint , and I mean mint. Its got 48,000 on the clock, and full VW service history until she got it at 32K.

I think its just a case of , shes a dozy cow , and hasnt bothered checking the oil ("i never had to on my driving lessons" .... Shocked

IMO , for £150-200 all in , I cant go wrong , I know it will be a days work changin the engine , but still , no biggie Smile

I recently did an engine change on a 1996 Seat Ibiza 1.4. More or less the same car.

I paid £150 for an engine delivered from a breaker. Once I'd also changed the cambelt, given it a really good service, and a few other bits like a thermostat and a clutch release bearing, it cost the girl owning it around £250.

So £350 for a car that should last a while. It was surprisingly fun to drive too.

Secure both the engine and the car before you do anything, check you can acquire both, have both awaiting your call, then decide, with the price in hand and in mind.

If I'm honest mate, I picked up two Mk2 Polos recently, both for £50 each. They're both 1.3 petrol, one was mint with no tax or MoT, but needs a new inlet manifold and carb, and the other is a bit shabby with no tax but MoT until October, and has a slight ignition problem.

Fixing both these is a lot easier and cheaper than an engine swap!

My advice would be leave it and find another bargain!
