Ugh, got woken up this morning at a god awful hour by my sister asking me to bring some books in to school for her, go to the bike and it won't start.
Basically, getting a lot of coughing, catching, but only on the starter. I drained the battery trying so thats on charge now. It rained last night and it seems to be having some trouble in the wet. I had the tank off the other day and cleaned the plugs/checked the HT leads and gave everything a good spray of wd40. Checked the coils as well they are fine. I don't have a voltmeter or the funds to get one right now, but I shall endevour to borrow one shortly.
Anything else I can check?
When I put the choke on all it does is backfire. I know it's running very rich at the moment, and after looking this morning I *think* the oil might be the right type, as when it's cold it's impossible to push it in gear with the clutch in, even with 3 people trying. I'm going to do an oil change as soon as I get some money.

Sounds like your clutch cable needs adjusting. It might not be related to the starting but it certainly isn't going to help. If its backfiring then the chances are its firing on two cylinders. It could be something like a coil pack, or it could even be a valve that isn't sealing properly and all the fuel is being pumped into the exhaust.
You really need to check for spark on all four cylinders. ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F

Cheers marjay, this is a very noob question but I've only ever checked for spark on kickstart bikes before, do I just get the plug out and put it on the head and use the starter button?
And ugh, seat unit design means having to take the whole rear end off to get the tank off!

Ah found the culprit, the plug caps weren't seated right, I'm going to get replacements, because they seem to get water in them very easily.
