Took the Hayabusa in today for a couple of new tyres and its MOT.

Before I set off I sounded off my new Stebel horn at the Mrs, partly to say godbye and partly to test it (and partly cos its shockingly loud Laughing ).

Anyway, long story short I get there and its stopped bloody working, 12v relay had given up the ghost between my house and the MOT place 5 miles away. Luckily they are a friendly bunch so gave me some tools and a space in the workshop to try and fix it, but without a new relay I had no chance so they let me take it home and fit the old horn back on. So it passed in the end but the bloody relays only been in use for 2 weeks and its only been used about 15 times, bloody italian shite.

On another note I had some Pilot Road 2's put on to replace my shitty Avons and good god what a difference. Wouldnt reccomend the Avons for anyone with a busa at all. Thumbs Up

Shit I wouldnt fancy that!! The bloke shouted to his mate 'Wheres the horn on these' and I thought why can't the numpty find the button! He actually meant the horn itself, was a shame cos as soon as I heard him mention it I stood up expecting him to press it and shit himself, but it never happened!

The lads at the XJR owners club have lots of good things to say about those tyres (Pilots).

I must admit I havent read any reviews of either but the roadsmarts are supposed to be very good but they are still in the 'touring' category so Im surprised someone like Titz with a blade would want the roadsmarts over something a bit more sporty (unless he wants mega miles from them)>

I took the pilot road 2's because a friend of mine on the UKbusas site reccomended them, he supplies tyres and has epic experience of different aspects of biking through his buisness so it was a no brainer for me. I like them so far.

The biggest emphasis is on how bad the Avons were. They made the front end feel like it was hovering and never in control. They would track to every bump and ridge in the road and make it feel like it was going to drop onto its side in a straight line. As for the back, it let go the other week at 85ish in 3rd gear, I know Ive got a fairly powerful bike but thats unacceptable to me.

Will be doing more miles tomorrow so will see what theyve got now they are scrubbed in a bit Thumbs Up

Interesting, seems everybody's raving about the storm's, which are apparently the successor to the azaro, just with added wet weather grip. Someone recommended them as a touring tyre for my TL and they have good reviews elsewhere.

I liked the michi road 2's I had before, but they never have good deals on em Neutral

Yeah the michelins werent cheap at all. My experience with the avons wasn't good at all. They had seemingly no grip at all in the wet and would break traction even under medium amounts of acceleration. Cornering on them made the bike feel like it was oscillating and at times they felt as though they didnt want to turn in and I found myself running wide. At slow speeds they made life difficult as the bike was unstable. At one point I was convinced my front bearings had gone or there was something seriously wrong with my forks and it put me off riding at all let alone aggresively. I came to the conclusion it was just me until I got the comments from the bloke fititng the michelins, without me prompting him he basically came out with all of the above so I was very pleased indeed.

It might be they are just not good for my bike but Ive had 1 avon on a CBR6 rear once and it scared me shitless. Those two experiences put together mean I wont be touching them with a barge pole ever again.

Having said that I have a couple of Avons on the car and theyre pretty much alright. On the plus side for the avaros they had squared a little but had covered a fair distance without wearing too much!

I have always used Avon Storms, with my linited experience all I can say is; I like them and they have never let me down. Despite many newbie errors.

I agree villers, my Hornet first came with Avon azoros on it, shocking tyre,

A couple of weeks into having the bike i came into a roundabout too hot and had no confidence to lean it over any more, just felt like it would wash out, went straight up onto the kerb... Went and changed the tyre with pleanty of tread left the next day with Pirelli Diablo's, what a difference...

I read on the XJR forums that tyre fitters have a book which tells them which tyres don't work with which bikes (he showed it to the bloke). I'm sure they said Avons are crap for XJR's.

Avons. Crap on XJR's, 'Busas and ZZR1100's. Sounds like they're bad for all high torque bikes.

If youve been riding with them and not had any moments then I'm really jealous. If you havent had one of them slip or make you think twice then fair enough, not just the avons but any tyre.

For the last few weeks Ive sat in traffic and seen guys hooning it to work and thought 'youre either very good, or nothings ever went wrong'.

In my experience Ive always gotten away with riding like a plank but been bitten on the arse while trying to be sensible.

Theres a few who say its all in your head but I would strongly disagree Rolling Eyes

I've never liked Avons. In my experience they are always lacking that extra bit of grip. Sure you don't/shouldn't need it, but it's nice to have in reserve 'just in case'.
Though, the Michelin race tyres I used were really bad from cold compared to Supercorsas. A fellow racer suggested the same was true of one of their road tyres (Pilot Sport I think) so I've avoided them too.

I've got Avon Storm ST's on my ZRX and they're great, never had a single problem with them and the michelins that were on it when I got the bike were terrible.
