Hello all,

Once again I've an NSR related question, to all the spanner monkeys Smile.
Based on my bike's manual, it's due for a piston ring change, so I went in to the Honda dealership in Crowthorne and asked them for a quote. They said, it'd cost somewhere around £230-£250, including the parts they need. And this made me start thinking.

Obviously I'd like to save as much money as possible - especially knowing that I'll probably sell this bike in a good few months time - so I was wondering how difficult it is to do this. Or to put it this way: Is it doable for someone with little mechanical experience (when it comes to bikes) but eager to learn? Or shall I just let them do it / leave the bike as it is and hope it won't explode on me?

cheers

I'd say have a go, get a haynes manual and some decent tools. Shocked Do everything methodically and slowly and get it right first time. Bikes aint difficult and armed with the haynes manual yer onto a winner.

Good luck Very Happy

Cheers, I've been trying to find a Haynes manual, but I couldn't get hold of any for my bike, which's a bit of a problem. Tho I've the workshop manual back at home, so I'll have a quick look at it, to see if it has all the information in it that I need.

Other than a torque wrench, is there any other 'special' tool that I might need?

should be able to find a manual here https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=140295

cant think of any special tools apart from torque wrench, i always found one of the bendy screwdriver bit holder things usefull for taking the clamp off the airbox but im sure its doable without.

nsr's are a doddle to work on so you should be fine Thumbs Up

the rings cost £22 ex VAT , you need (to make a good job) :
- base cylinder seal
- cylinder head gasket
- oil seal (valves shaft)
- piston pin
- 2 circlips
- small end bearing
- 1 L cooling liquid
all together about £50 ex VAT and it's about 2 1/2 hours job (not for a boeotian

One thing I found I had to buy specially was a 12mm ring spanner with a thin ring bit for the r/h side front barrel nut. A normal sized one wouldn't fit between the nut and the side of the barrel.

Not sure if it'll be the same on yours, but if it is, then you don't want to have to stop halfway through and find a toolshop, as you don't have a spanner that'll fit.
