Sweet, beautiful honey-flavoured Mead. The drink that doesn't taste alcoholic but gets you shit faced.

Where can I acquire this. Asides from going to Lindisfarne? Preferably by post.

It is beautiful. I've only had it twice.

Once when I was 12, got me nicely pished. Then my grandparents did a trip to Lindisfarne t'other day and brought some back. Gorgeous.

But it literally tastes like mixing a splash of white wine in with a load of honey and water.

Which is not to far from reality anyway. And it feels perfectly normal to drink it at 9am.

I may be forced to mix a tub of vodka in with loads of honey and water just to ease the cravings.

Seems theres alot of online retailers selling it. Not sure about the quanties/p+p though.

There are lots of countryside places that make it, albeit you'd need to be sure they made it properly, and not just some of that Ye Olde Rustick Shyte out of Packettes ("instant alcohol just add honey and put in fancy jars" type thing).

But I can't be arsed looking for them.

I quite fancy that a little jaunt out into the depths of proper countryside would soon find you some of the real deal, my lord Bonny of Ricardoshire.

A company I worked for years ago held the christmas do at Warwick castle, as a medieval banquet. We were encouraged to rip meat and bread apart with our hands (bone throwing was a no-no, but we did anyway) and jugs of mead were in constant supply. Lovely stuff. Something of a pet subject of mine. What sort do you prefer? The lighter the colour the crisper as a rule, personal favourites of mine (of the larger named brands) are Oransay mead and the "Cornish mead wine" from the Cornish mead company. Lurgashall also deserves an honourable mention.

I did make my own for a while, keep meaning to start again now I'm fairly settled. Will have to have a nose around for local bee keepers.

Dunno if it's just the region I'm in, but pretty much all of the organic, farmers shop, posh foody deli type places around my way sell mead. I was in one not that long ago aswell which sold 'preview' bottles of single malt too, bottled before the normal 10-12-15yrs etc. I really didn't have the stomach to try a 6yr old, cask strength Laphroaig - the 10yr old is potent enough even at 40% and with being aged 10yrs, cant imagine how much like fire-water the 6 cask strength is!

I used to use a small oak whisky cask that had been acquired from gods know where, gave the drink a wonderfully smooth an smoky flavour after a year laid down. Kept meaning to try adding a hint of elderflower somewhere in the maturation to give it a bit of depth.

A tip, particularly the lighter meads can be quite sharp when first opened. They actually mature and mellow in an opened (as in opened and with the lid/cork back on), often making a good mead quite special after a year or so.

Not ever done it personally, but when High Fearnley-Whittingstall made his home-brew stuff, he just uses one of those big rubber bins you get from B&Q for a couple of quid for putting garden waste in. I dare say that as long as it's sterilised correctly though you could use what you wanted - the fermenting bin I have for my home-brew kit is just a big plastic bucket with volume markings on the sides!

And Shaggy, that sounds very similar to the thing where I first tried it. It was all period dress etc and a bit twee... but the constantly flowing jugs of mead were great.

Tarmacsurfer- The stuff we just got called Lindisfarne Mead (quite famous it seems) was nice, but a bit sharp. I remember the stuff we had before seemed to be much sweeter.

I essentially want the taste of a lot of honey mixed with a small amount of hot water (if you catch my drift), but alcoholic Love the treacly texture.

Yah, Lindisfarne is probably one of the biggest.

If it's the sweet/sticky stuff you like then check out the Cornish mead I mentioned, that's a fairly dark mead with a good texture.

I had the urge to buy mead recently, you can buy it in Morrisons and Asda but it's well hidden....

In Asda it's under the label "Gale's Country Wines" (honey/mead variety obviously), and it's badass!

Morissons is Country Harvest, or Gold Harvest or something and it's alright, the previous is better.

It's not going to be as great as the really expensive stuff, but for £5ish a bottle, it aint bad.
