My biking ownership curve was tootling along just nicely, the usual suspects, hornet to a cbr600, cbr600 to a 929 blade, blade to an 07 R1, then the hiccup.
Convinced myself i needed to slow down, needed something different, something comfortable, something for distance. So i bought an R1200GS
capable, yes!
comfortable, yes!
distance, check!
exciting, no
reliable, FUCK NO
more gone wrong with it than the sodding economy!
after leaving me at the side of the road several times (this was a 2007 bike with warranty luckily)
i went to see what was around sportsbike wise.
dont like the looks of the current gixxer,
Kawasaki have never really done it for me (read, a bit too on the exciting side)
that left the new R1 or the blade, the looks of either didnt realy excite at first, although the R1 doesnt look that bad in the flesh with a set of aftermarket cans on it, and the blade looks better in the flesh especially with the Repsol paint scheme.
(this post wasnt meant to be this long winded, sorry)
after test riding both i plumped for........

100 miles into running it in and this thing handles like a dream, drop your head and it drops into the corner ____________________ Hornet 600, CBR600F, 929 blade, 07 R1, R1200GS, 09 Blade, 750 SRAD, ZZR1200, 954 Blade, KTM 990 Adventure, Ducati 749s |

gixxer belongs to my best mate, K5, strongest engine, and the standard exhaust note is just sublime. lazy bastard needs to clean it though ____________________ Hornet 600, CBR600F, 929 blade, 07 R1, R1200GS, 09 Blade, 750 SRAD, ZZR1200, 954 Blade, KTM 990 Adventure, Ducati 749s |

The only issue i have with the gixxer is it makes its torque very low down, which means its more prudent to stand it up a little before coming on the power, but that negative in the engine is a big positive in a lot of other ways. one of the greatest engines i've ever had the pleasure of useing that k5 tbh.
Paid too much for the blade tbh 9.5k but got a good price on the GS for trade in so the price to change wasnt too shabby.
will have to wait till its run in more to comment on the engine but the handling is something else, instantly accessible and quite flattering to the rider. ____________________ Hornet 600, CBR600F, 929 blade, 07 R1, R1200GS, 09 Blade, 750 SRAD, ZZR1200, 954 Blade, KTM 990 Adventure, Ducati 749s |
