 |
|
I'm after a bike more suited to touring scotland this year and have come across this vfr:
https://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x13/fronterapics/hondavfr.jpg
Heres what the guy had to say about it:
| the advert wrote: | this bike has been my pride and joy , vfr 800 on a 99 t plate , this bike has a service history like you have never seen , its just had a full one , long tax and test , data tool alarm with 3 fobs crash mushrooms , heated grips , built in 12v power point for sat nav and charging your mobile aty the same time , double bubble screen , bilett vfr bar ends , blue flame can , scott oiler , carbon yoke cover , solo seat plus honda rack , rossi graphics , i have a set of bar raisers to go with it very easy to fit , it has a built in trickle mate for the battery , i manual on cd , i have the standard screen , good rubber , starts on the button runs and sounds a dream , zx 1 added at last service , it is an import so clocks in kph with mph stickers on , its done 130 k but you wont know it , these bikes will do double that , been to the nurburg ring twice , its been a joy to own |
So,it has quite high mileage (very high) and has been to the nurburg ring twice so it's probably had a really hard life.
I know these vfr's have a reputation for being solid little bikes but does the above sound ok?
Anything in particular i should watch out for?
Should i leave it alone?
I think it looks awesome but i dont want something that's gonna turn into a money pit...and it has to get me as far north as land will allow.
Thanks

If it's a grand, I'd say it's worth it.
That's based on my educated assumption that you can pick up a replacement vfr engine for £500 or slightly under. And fit it yourself too!

130K isn't high miles for a VFR its a flagship pre 2003 bike (when Honda turned evil) and thus it will go to the moon and back twice as it is super heavily over engineered. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. I have no idea what kind of miles VFR's can reach,
but I wouldn't really read into the fact that its been around the Nurburgring a couple of times. Its only 15 miles long and I doubt if he was going that crazy if he had to ride it back home to the UK.
Also I kind of expect that a bike thats done that many miles would have been dropped or slid down the road once or twice in its life time. ____________________ Yamaha FZR400RR 3tj

id take it.
have a good listen for any knocks and stuff, and any bad stuff.
if it runs fine, theres no need for anything to go wrong, and if theres proof of the ''major service'' then your laughing.
with that sort of milage, you'll want to be looking for the shims being done 2 or 3 times, and other than that, nothing really.
buy new clocks with a lower milage ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. In summery, mattsprattuk is a gobby little sh1tebag, dopehead tw4t, but sadly for all of us, he probably isn't THAT full of sh1te!!

Well i had my mate round tonight to check it over for me.
(he's a technician at kawasaki)
He said the engine sounds sweet as which he expected anyway.
Problems with it are: fork seals needing done (probably 'cos it's stood a while, fair weather bikers ) and head bearings need nipped up a bit.
It's hard to tell for sure as it could be the fork seal leaking down but it looks like the brake pipes are leaking from the banjo bolts.
It really does look like they all have stainless steel washers on them instead of copper ones so it could be that?.
But like i say it could just be the fork seals *fingers crossed* but no biggy either way.
EDIT:
Brake pipes weren't leaking and neither was the fork seals
It's just been covered everywhere with (i assume) muc-off.
So all that needs doing is the head bearings needing nipped a bit (10minute job) ____________________ DRZ-400sm

Yup,
Been doing a lot of reading up on them and heard nothing but good things (even very high mileage models)
It's going to be a pleasure to ride round scotland on this year, considering last year i done it on my cb500
Noticed aswell that i dont have a main stand .That would have been handy.

Shit bargain of the year that. The can alone would fetch 100 quid on egay. Have fun with it. Remove the airbox snorkel for a better intake noise And have a read about PAIR valves if your fuel economy goes crap. ____________________ 2004 Aprilia Tuono |
