...fixing and riding one of these:

It needs a bit of work for the MOT but shouldn't be a major problem. I'm really looking forward to seeing what it can do Mr. Green

Cheers

The bloke who owns it had the option to buy an RG500, tuned RD350 and an RD250 for £5k. He couldn't afford it at the time but is now gutted that he didn't. He has the RD500 above, which has a leaky fork seal and possibly knackered swingarm bearings, once that is done it will be perfect.

Two stroke mentalism rules! Mr. Green

I'd have found £5k, although I do already have a 350 powervalve and an LC.

The PV cost £500 and has had a lot of work done to it (by myself) and the LC cost £1000 and just needs a new rear wheel which I have and I'm waiting for the powdercoaters to call me back to tell me that it is done.

No reason for it to be, although some would argue that not sharing common crankpins they are not true V engines. Basically just 4 seperate 125cc cylinders either on a common crank (wider and a bit more difficult to seperate the crankcase volumes) or 2 seperate cranks geared together (narrower but longer, easier to seperate the crankcase volumes).

All the best

Same way as any 2-stroke really, Carbs sit in the middle of the V. I'm not sure what the firing order is on the RD but the set-up is as per a 4-srtoke but with 2-stroke functionality.

Cheers

Assuming that you don't fall of the back when the power suddenly arriveas en masse , how do these 80s beasts compare with a modern sports bike at full chat in a straight line?

I'd like to have a go on a tuned 2 stroke just for the experience -my home-'tuned' Garelli Katia wasn't quite the same Wink

Hi

As standard, don't expect an RD500 to be either that fast or have a nasty power delivery (if you want the nasty power delivery then look at an older pre powervalved 2 stroke, like an RD400).

Top speed of the RD (when standard) will be in the region of 140mph, not really any great difference to the 600s of the time. They (and the RG500) were in a pretty low state of tune as standard.

All the best

Keith

I love it I did my apprenticeship on a RD50 followed by the RD125 and finally the RD350 I would love to get one again. What sort of money are we talking of for a doer upper. 350 or even 125

What about when ported to an inch of its life and fitted with a fairly extreme expansion chamber?

That would largely depend on how the work was done.

Not even the 500GP bikes were tuned to that extent. No point as the riders were quicker on them when they were detuned a bit and less inclined to try and send the rider into orbit.

If you want ultimate peak power then you wouldn't bother with a power valve. That is just there to make the bike rideable at low revs when tuned more for performance, but ultimatly will cost a small amount of peak power.

All the best

Keith
