 |
|
I've just had a random blast from the past thought, and it got me wondering. I'm guessing that people have some words that only are used within your family (I've certainly not heard these anywhere outside mine), so post them up, with their meanings, and maybe how they came to be. Let's see if there's any that we thought were unique, but are actually known by others.
Tat-tats
A walk, or outing. I did read recently that Wilf Lunn had an aunt that used the expression "have a ta-ta to town", so it might be an antiquated northern thing.
Biglots
A poo.
Aughties
See Biglots. The "T" is silent, from the noise you make when attempting to shift a blockage. On the push you get "aaauuuuuggggghhhhhhh" and on the release, an "eeeeeeez" of relief.
Woppy Woppy
Beer. Came from my elder sister as a baby, attempting to repeat the Watney's slogan, "What we want is Watney's". Shortened from "Woppy woppy woppy".
Oif
Coffee.
Oifmilk
White coffee.

Reminded me of some more :-
Oofer TV Remote
Doofer Short for Dooferlator. A cigarette one keeps behind one's ear. As in, "It'll do for later". ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Don't take it personally.

We're rather multicultural in our household, a complicated mishmash of Mockney, Italian and Kiwi expressions, gestures and accents.
Mostly, Anita and I tend to add little Italianisations into our conversation randomly, adding -a, -o, "ucciano" or "ooch/ox" to the end of things, which is a very Campanese way of talking.
Occasionally we say Italian things in a Mockney accent, which is how her father talks - having been here nearly 50 years now ("biscotti" and "ricotta" have no t's ... just glottal stops).
"Where's my white t-shirt?"
"It's out in the giardino (on the washing line)."
It's so blatantly anglicised, that even Andy usually recognises what we are saying ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

Spoggie / Spoggy
Though I suspect it wasn't just a family word, I'm sure other northerners use it too. ____________________ Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter won't mind - Dr. Seuss |

Gib-Gob or Gibber as a replacement for a forgotten word, which can lead to Gib-Gob Gibber in some conversations between me my mum and sister.
