Don't know if this is country wide, but just picked up 6 litres of 5W/40 Fully Synthetic ('own' Brand) oil at Brooklands branch - works out at £1.50 per litre. There are going to be people who turn their nose up at this due to brand, but still works out cheaper than a 'known' brand non-synth. Perfect for all you dry clutch riders out there. |

Didn't need any oil but just picked up 2 wipers for our freelander for £1.50 each ____________________ Harold_Shand wrote: I suppose it's like anything, you get your fingers burned when you start out, you learn from it and eventually become a complete arsehole about the whole thing. |

Good one R32 - wasn't sure what response this thread would get, but just to add, other genuine half price items (yesterday) were:- WD40/Holts Tyreweld/Redex Injector additive(various) plus wipers, screenwash etc. Don't understand what's moved them to do it, but am not complaining. |

this could start a debate benjami... I would say for long term don't do it - you could compromise with semi-synth. After a while clutch take-up character changes as plates get well and truly saturated with the slippery stuff. Do a search and make your own mind up |

fully synthetic oil is better for your engine- end of
i always put it in my bike with no clutch slipping problems,
people who say differently are the tight cunts who dont want to pay an extra tenner for it...
a mechanic im friendly with at kawasaki also agree's with this.

Its all in here if you do a search but in simple terms the only thing to watch out for are the additives, primarily, friction modifers. The car oils that can and will cause problems are generally well known, for instance magnatec is a definate no no.
Different bike manufacturers recommend different oil, some fully synthetic others semi. Me? really could care less, whatever I find going cheap. The only thing I will add is that if you do have an older bike and have never used synthetic oil, don't. Stick with the mineral stuff it might save you a lot of problems.
Do you remember the days when there was just oil? Much easier. ____________________ https://www.metacafe.com/watch/1972097/how_to_behave_on_a_forum/ |

This statement shows you (1016) haven't the greated grasp of the subject. [End 1016 relevance here].
[For the rest of you]
We can all have an opinion on oil of course, but there are facts behind why certain oils act the way they do, and which oils are best avoided and for which reasons.
My mate told me, isn't really much of an argument. Especially given that your average mechanic is just another person on the street, and what they know about oil is as much as they can be bothered to read, much like the rest of us.
Start your reading on the subject,
here https://www.nordicgroup.us/oil.htm - General oil stuff
here https://www.vfrworld.com/tex_vfr/tech/oil.htm - Motorbike specifici
and here https://www.xs11.com/xs11-info/tech-tips/maintenance/oil---lubrication/57-the-truth-about-using-automotive-oil-in-your-motorcycle.html - Car oil in motorbikes
and a further take
https://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Oils1.html - Big article on oil that starts from the beginning, all from perspective of motorcycles
and start to make your own mind up.
Key points are;
In simple terms, motorcycle engines use the same oil for the gearbox as they do for the engine, cars do not. Gearboxes can be very hard on the wrong sort of oil, causing much more premature break down of the oil than you would expect in a car. Read about oil shear here
https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/oilshear.htm
The clutch slipping thing... again in the simplest terms possible, explained better in the links i posted.
Some car oils are marketed as what is called energy conserving, or something along these lines. Will have a lower second number (i.e. 10w30 rather than 10w40) These have additives (friction modifiers) in order to make the oil thinner, creating less work for the engine and promising to improve things like fuel economy. It is these friction modifiers that cause the supposed issues with bike clutches.
I don't know many people that have experienced this first hand, it's just one of things bikers like to talk about to make themselves sound like they have half a clue.
Regular oil changes, i.e. before significant breakdown of additives within the oil occurs to a point where it is bad for the engine, is far more important than which specific all singing all dancing brand you choose to pay through the nose for.
I'm currently paying £2 a litre for 15w40 oil, from Comma, that is marketed as synthetic based diesel oil. My choice, based on my research.
Please read at least some of the links, absorb and inwardly digest. Hope it is of some help/interest to those who want to know a bit more about oil.

I dunno about the Tesco cheap oil but I got a gallon of that £5 Asda stuff people were on about here a while back to do a simple flush on an engine and I wouldn't put it in a lawmmower. It was absolute shite. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

oh God, here we go again..... don't know if you've noticed Gooseman, but in the few times I have replied on a technical area, I hope I have gone out of my way to not appear to be patronising - a stance that you have chosen to adopt immediately... To answer your post in parts :- Firstly, I only gave the briefest of replies, partly to let the reader go and explore themselves, if I wanted to go into the deepest realms of explaining the science connected to 'how oil works' I would delve into my own collection thank you very much.. (good of you to take the trouble to provide links all the same - bit of a (rusty) Busman's holiday for me)
You have really jumped to a conclusion in your first sentence, and you are wrong. I don't know when you last laughed, but my 'my mate told me' (if you read that sentence to the end) was incapable of having any link with reality, instead it was a light-hearted dig at previous posters reference to his 'Kawasaki' mechanic. Your later sentences, (with the arrow bit - freely admit to having no knowledge of how to post them, nor any interest in learning, as they appear to be a tool existing purely to impress..) appear to be quite fundamental and certainly elementary to my eyes, but again, thanks for the thought.
The one thing I will certainly remember from your post is your name, as, from first impressions, you are the last person i would ever want to have a Technical discussion with, and will bear that in mind for the future.... |

my response to above is covered in first reply to Ichy. - nothing to do with clutch being exposed to oil, merely the long term effect when full synthetic used |

Dont be so big headed as to think anything more than the first sentence was aimed at you. That basically renders most of your reply to 'me' moot. So i'll leave it there for now. I can edit it further for clarity if you wish, or is me telling you the fact enough.
The rest is posted entirely as a public service, so perhaps when somebody searches about oil they might get more of the facts/science and less of the bullshit. If even to save somebody searching for a couple of minutes. JUST TO CLARIFY, the word BULLSHIT, not aimed at you, just in the general sense that you tend to get.

Your choice of course, and very possibly your loss also. Those who take the time to get to know me a little better would probably disagree, and anyone else I couldn't give a fuck about.
[EDIT] Thanks for the pm, really upset you didn't I. I don't care what your background is, its easy to be a nuclear rocket scientist on the internet after the fact. Go cry emo kid, etc. ____________________ So in other words, he stopped you for being flagrantly in posession of a motorcycle in direct contravention of the Hippies, Darkies and People Whose Face I Don't Like The Look of (Police Powers) Act. 1976 |
