PostPosted: 18:30 - 27 May 2008    Post subject: Re: Trail Riding Holiday - Anyone up for it? Reply with quote

Could be interested - was looking at maybe doing something like this earlier in the year when I had some holiday to use up, but couldn't find my passport so didn't do anything (probably good as I got my garage sorted instead).

However I'm more of a 'probably not' at the moment; got quite a bit on over the next few months.
I am quite tempted to try and head off maybe to spain towards the end of the year - probably just a 'buy a ferry ticket and see where I get too' kind of thing.

If we're talking more like a long weekend, I could be interested sooner - ie fly out thursday night, ride for three or four days then come back Sunday or Monday evening.

Although they're not cheap, the KTM adventure tours and similar are definitely worth a look.

G, I was thinking towards the end of the year when the temps will be more bearable. Like you, I have lots of holiday and am struggling to think of ways to use them without wasting them.

Will have to do a bit of research.

Been looking into going here but they only have August available (too hot really) and not the full week. Flights are also expensive at £200+. So with airport transfers included I was looking at very nearly £900 for the flights, three days riding, accomodation, breakfasts and lunches. So about £300 a day.

What I'm going to do (most likely) is go around March time for a full week (5 days riding) which I've worked out is about £215 a day all in. Still pricey but much better.

So it works out about 1k plus beer and evening meal.

Sod it I'm going to do it.

Another to consider is going somewhere like Tenerife or similar; quite a few such places have such companies that are generally charging around £150 a day all (less for more people/time often) for guided trail riding all in.
If you've got the time and book at the right time you can get a full two week holiday for about £250 half board including flights.
Seems to be making better use of the flights/time as such as you can do a bit more while you're there.

Once you factor in 5 days of £150 plus the £250 flights/board you're at the £1k mark anyway.

I like the idea of the hassle free nature of it all, remember this is a holiday after all Wink

I'm emailling the owners with options and seeing what's available etc so will have a look into it.

The bikes look good - Honda CRFs, the place looks good and the reviews are good.

Yea, but for your £1k you also get another 9 days to laze about/find other stuff to do somewhere sunny Smile... though as you say more hassle and the riding may not be quite so good.

Some of the KTM adventure tours look very interesting, but tend to be expensive unfortunately Sad.

True, but to be honest I'm not very good at lazing around in the sun on my own and tend to get bored.

We'll see anyway, still early days.

Plenty of other stuff to do there too; Dusty went there a while ago which was why I'd mentioned it; most stuff is pretty cheap compared to the UK, though will still add to the bill, of course, as an idea, some of what he did..
Quads (adventure style, not fast)
Go karting
Hired a road motorbike
Jetskis
etc, etc...

I can highly recommend Redtread. Ian and Sally are superb hosts, the bikes are all 2007 or 2008 model 230, 250 or 400s and very well maintained. Even my (biggish) crash last year failed to break a 250 (you can choose which you'd like - subject to ability / size limitations!

You stay on site, and the accomodation is clean, comfortable and has a swimming pool on hand.

The cafés you stop at on the tour are usually very good, and lunch is included - just take your pick from the menu.

I'm hoping to get out there again this year, but money's a bit tight Sad

Where ever you go, enjoy it Thumbs Up

I'm off to sunny, sunny Spain Very Happy

March the 6th next year though so a long wait but something to look forward to. The only other availability this year was August (too hot really) and just before Crimbo. Picked the March date out of thin air and thought fook it, gonna do it.

Cheers Gordo, really looking forward to it, every review in their (hopefully uncensored Wink ) guest book is extremely good.

Mike, I'm flexible with dates as well, just picked the March date out of thin air. If another date would be easier for you just let me know.

I'm easy with dates too.
Marc, the guy I bought the Gasser off, goes there regularly and highly recommends it.
I'd better start saving my scrap copper Wink

Well both of my reviews were uncensored Smile

The photos from my first trip out there are here:
https://gordo.fotopic.net/c1120526.html

Gives you the general idea, anyway. They had Suzukis when I first went out there, but it's an all Honda fleet now.

They give you tuition too - here's the cornering position practice at the track:
https://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=43083&l=33de7&id=521941535

If you can get it right there, you're less likely to fall off the side of a cliff when you're up in the mountains. Cool
