Exhaust smoke is normal when the engine is cold.
Pressure in the radiator is also normal when it is warm.

Let it cool to stone cold, and start it up with the cap off the radiator. If it pressurises when the water is sill cold then your head gasket is gone.

Get the panels off.
Take the head & barrel off and have a good look at it, or drop it off with a mechanic.

50's tend to be owned by people with no mechanical knowlege, expirence with or will to do maintanence so its likely an engine rebuild is long overdue.

Head Gasket
Base Gasket
Piston rings

will be a must

Piston
Rebore

are probables.

Probably cost you £100 if you do it all yourself, more if you get a garage to do it.

Don't worry, this needs doing to every 2 stroke every now and then, probably more so with little ones!
