Hi there, some of you may remember me as that guy who crashed his Cagiva planet, once then twice then fixed it. I've been riding for awhile now and fancy moving up to something with a bit more power to it. I rode a 600cc CBR in thailand and loved it, although though that the bike was pretty heavy for me. I was thinking maybe 250cc - 600cc in that kind of area.

I quite like the style of my Cagiva, I much prefer naked bikes to faired racing ones, but I'm open to new ideas if the bike really is that great. I mainly just want something that handles well, has a bit more bite and won't dent my account so much.

On a side note I've about £600-900 to spend on it really, I was hoping that someone could recommend a good bike that's stood the test of time.

Ideas then lads?

That's the Kawasaki GPZ right?

-

Had a look, sounds good but not too fond on the style of the bike...

For under £900 you aren't gonna get anything with much style TBH, your looking at 80/90's comuters and knackered sports bikes.

Just had a quick look on the bay, and this is finishing soon, I doubt it will go for under £900 mind.

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1997-YAMAHA-TRX-850-SUPER-SPORT-BLUE_W0QQitemZ160328150005QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Motorcycles?hash=item160328150005&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

Cracking bikes, Don't be put off by the fact it's an 850, insurance will be cheaper than most 600cc and I doubt it weighs much more.

The fork seals on this are knackered which is a fairly easy job if you no what your doing. It would cost a maximum of £30 for the parts (Seals and oil)

I guess my opinion is a little biased but i would agree with the GPZ thing, you will get a pretty tidy one for £1000.

If thats not your thinng most of the 500's come fully naked, or perhapse you could find a bandit or hornet or something for under the 1k mark, baring in mind the CBR600 is an all out sports bike you're unlikely to find a anything much lighter, however i would suggest that you will get used to the wieght in a week or two Thumbs Up

Thanks for the input guys, the GS500 has grown on me and I quite like the look of the honda hornet. Is it a reliable bike though? After owning a Cagiva I want something more solid.

Any others I should look at?

Obviously generalising quite a bit here but anything mid/late 90's onwards should be quite reliable, hornet included.

This assumes they have been looked after of course and dont have a million miles on the clock...

Well I'm hoping to sell my cagiva for around £1100-1200, but of course I can't spend all of that in one go on a bike as I'll need MOT, insurance, tax etc.

Plenty of bikes heavier than a cbr6! Your just not used to it. A 125 will feel like a pushbike once you start riding a big bike.

Won't get anything particularly shiny for that tbh!

hornets reliable but i doubt you would get one for 900 quid maybe a cb1 its a 400 or maybe a jellymould cbr or a rough/tatty steely cbr which are both 600s.

cb500 probably your best bet since you could probably get quite a low mileage one for that which normally means less hassle.

dont let the size or weight of a cbr600 worry you man, im only 5ft 6 and weigh 145lb's and the bike is no bother for me at all, so if you can find one in budget go for it

Dude, you can not jump from a planet to a cb500!
The cb is so plain and boring compared to the planet!
I know what you mean about needing more oomph though, as at the end of the day it is a glorified 125.
I'm considering dropping a 400 engine into my planet frame, as i've heard the frame can easily handle it, (it's an idea) anyways don't forget its not all about speed ya wanna look cool aswell lol
Good luck pal

Kawasaki GPZ500S or Honda CB500S.

Ignore anyone who says they are boring bikes. The GPZ is a popular track bike in the US and the CB500 has its own race series. At 7,000 RPM the GPZ really takes off - it's a bit like a grown up 2 stroke. Good fun to ride.

Insurance group 8 for the GPZ, 9 for the CB. Both are around 125mph flat out. 0-60 in under 5 seconds. Typical fuel economy of 60mpg, although if you fit a Scottoiler and take it easy they will return 70mpg.

The CB has it's own race series because they are cheap and plentiful not because they are exciting.

A scotoiler will not help MPG.

I think going from a planet 125 to a paralell twin 500 is a bad move. I would rather have the planet to ride about on, it would be more fun. The difference in speed is not that much and the planet is lighter and will have better handling.

I honestly think you are better off keeping the planet.
