My mates just had his SV out for the first time, its restricted.

Hes having two problems:

1) the speedo isnt indicating speed - Im saying the speedo drive/cable has gone but if its a speedo operated from the gearbox/front sprocket area i dont have a clue.

2) He says the bike cuts out when hes coming to a stop - this is the major problem, he said its his battery needing charging but obv this isnt the case. i think its either:

Idle too low, although when i heard it idle in his garage from cold it sounded spot on to me.

Flooding cylinder(s), possibly down to the restriction however i wouldnt think this is the case unless the jetted hasnt been changed if it should have been. It could be a dirty air filter/bad plugs/coils/leads too IMO.

What would you say, i ddint get much more info from him to be honest!

The speedo on that SV is read from the front wheel. Get him/her to inspect it.

i checked out the bike, and as you said the speedo was fornt wheel, i followed the wire/cable and discovered a clean cut. obviously someone has fucked about with it before his ownership.

Also, the bike idles a little low he says it often stalls at lights etc if he doesnt rev it. its slightly hesistant to rev up from a stop. i tried to adjust the idle (unsure of what its actually meant to be) but trying to turn the adjuster had no effect, it was also very stiff!

With adjusting the idle screw its best to 'blip' the throttle to reseat the throttle slides as sometimes the adjuster screws just dig into the slides and have no beneficial effect at all..

Easy way to do it is to start the bike up.. and turn the idle screw a 1/4 turn at a time and blip the throttle several times this allows the slides to reseat to their new height.. repeat until you have the idle speed you desire Smile....
Not sure if the SV carbs have a idle on each or one that operates both carbs via the throttle linkage.. If you an fill me in on the adjustment method then i might be able to offer a bit more info of help Smile

Hope this helps
