Just cleanned my garage and painted it today, was amazed in how much space i had.
I want a project like a 125 supermoto or something.
I need:
Something i can ride legally without restricting it (33bhp or less)
Supermoto
Something cheap-ish
Somthing that people crash often so i can get parts!
any ideas.
i was thinking of ringing a few breakers and trying to find a dtx 125 or something.
I want to get right inside of it. Everything out, painted polished and cleanned, Inside the engine and everything.
This will be my 1st so not too complicated.
Any help will be apriciated

I may have just the thing!
I've got a CRM125 that I had vague plans of turning into a supermoto, until I got a KTM200 which I can bolt my KTM supermoto wheels straight onto.
The CRM is far from cosmetically perfect, but does come with a big pile of spares which includes a spare set of wheels (for lacing supermoto rims to if wanted), as well as lots of other stuff, like swingarm, radiator, exhaust etc.
It is not that common a model, however the engine is from a NSR125, so is quite common and has a bit more go than the DT, but isn't as good off-road.
I've recently had it apart and apart from a leaking coolant gasket (I blame marjay's dodgy instant-gasket stuff!) all seems to be fine.

Quite frankly my budget is non existant at the moment. (Been riding like my grandad trying to save petrol not nice when the bikes wanting to be razzed)
But was thinking i can once payday comes buy a engine from a chosen bike and start to work in cleaning and trying to work out how it all works, I think it will help me in the future, planning on doing a cource in bike mechanics and seeing if i can worm myslef into working on them.
So a nice little single clynder engine. The proced to work. steadly saving and begging for frame, swing arm, forks and wheels.

Not just saying this because I'm trying to sell a bike , but usually working that way is a lot more frustrating and massively more expensive.
Were it me, I'd look out for something that's 95% complete, but in need of a bit of work and go from there. Maybe something like a DT will be a bit beyond the price range - even an engine from a breakers is going to be a decent wedge. However, something a bit older, or a more road-orientated bike, the older MZ125s often go for literally pennies.
The complete bike not only ends up a lot cheaper in the medium to long term, but is 'easier' and doesn't leave you with a completed bike which doesn't run because something you didn't know you were missing wasn't assembled when you first started working on it.
Were it me, I'd save the money on a course at the moment and use that money for buying bikes/bits/tools - get a workshop manual and go from there . |
