Bit of a noob question, but how much attention should I be paying to the temp reading on my bike?

I mean, it's obviously there for a reason, but I don't really know how to interpret the reading other than "ooh that seems quite hot". Or "ooh that's not as hot now I'm moving along".

What is too hot? I think the max it has ever got to is 220°F.

I assume that if it's overheating, it will warn me with some flashing light action, but I wouldn't really know what to do if that ever happened.

I mean, I know not to rag it until it gets up to temp (whatever that is) and I know that if it's looking a bit hot, not to just stop but to try and get some air flowing round it. But that's it.

This is compounded by the fact that it's in Fahrenheit, so it makes even less sense.

Been bugging me for a while. Any help appreciated.

220f is about 104c.Most fans should kick in at about 98-100c so shouldn't really go much over 104 imo.

(if you look at the rad fan switch it should have engraved onto it what temp it turns on at)

As long as your radiator fan is working there's nothing to worry about really..

Normal operating temp is about 78c on my bike (172f) which is about where it should be before really giving it some.
